(All in the Past - Birth-2008)

When Daphne Millbrook was growing up in Lawrence, Kansas, she was always told that she was going to someday be a famous runner just like her track-star mother. This all came crashing down, however, when, still at a young age, Daphne was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Sure enough, the disease soon began taking control until Daphne couldn't walk by herself any longer. She was trapped into braces she would probably have until she died. During her younger years, Daphne’s closest friend and confidante became the scarecrow, Ray, that she put in the field when she was thirteen—because that was the farthest away from home she could now get.

Being diagnosed did more than make her aware of the problem; Daphne let the hopelessness of her situation take over her mind, as well, until she had quite bitter. She shot down her mother's attempts to get her to exercise or try experimental treatments. The two, once close, got into more and more arguments. Daphne's distrust of the encouragements became sealed when her mother was told she had cancer and also lost hope.

The fighting didn’t stop now that both Millbrook women were sick. The situation, in fact, only seemed to worsen. Daphne picked on her mother, making cruel comments about her cancer, because it was the cancer that she was inherently angry at—that, and the fact that her mother wasn't fighting it like she’d always told Daphne to. How could she push Daphne to do walking exercises when she couldn’t even take are of herself, now? A snipe about how her mother couldn't get out of bed was the last thing Daphne ever said to her.

At the funeral, Daphne was surrounded by sympathizers, but she just couldn't take their company. Everything they said sounded fake—stupid. Daphne did her best crippled version of storming out but tripped and ended up laid out at the edge of their cornfield. It was here that her frustration peaked into a vivid memory of all the times her mother told her that she could still get up and make something of herself. For the first time, Daphne listened. And she got up.

And she ran.

With the eclipse, and her own inner revelation, Daphne gained the ability to move at super speeds and she exercised it in great abundance before rushing back to her house to reveal the miracle to her father. The family celebration was cut short by the arrival of Thompson, who attempted to have Daphne brought to his facility for "help". Insisting that she was cured, and that her mother never would’ve allowed something like this, Daphne refused and had a big fight with her father when he thought she should go. Daphne shouted that she wished her father had died instead and ran away.

The next months were a rush for Daphne as she visited every country, city, and landmark she had ever dreamed of. It was the most amazing experience of all. But every time she slowed down, she remembered the home and father she'd left behind—and the state she'd left them in. Once or twice she considered calling, and one time in Paris she actually dialed and heard her father's voice. There were also the grips of reality that even Daphne couldn't speed past. She was alone, homeless, and broke. Her attempts at getting a job failed for one reason or another until she finally resorted to stealing. And found she had quite the knack for it. Ya know, the whole… super-speedy thing…

Anyway, Daphne now resorted to thievery to get whatever she wanted—and she liked it, too. She remained in France as it was her favorite and eventually was approached by criminal underworlder, Samir. He had a penchant for black market dealings and gave Daphne her own apartment and a split of the cut when she stole things for him to sell. Since she was stealing things so they could be "given" back to the country of their origin, Daphne easily justified her life to herself. Plus, she had her own digs. And what girl doesn’t like that? Some of the better things that Samir didn’t care about she even kept for her own place.

It couldn't last forever. One day, Daphne sped up to Samir's place to find that he wasn’t there at all. In fact, there was some bald guy there instead. He told Daphne that Samir had always been working for his organization—and therefore her also by association—but that Samir had been taken out of the equation. They still wanted to work with her, however, and would do her the favor of keeping her name private. Daphne agreed because, hey, money was money.

For a while, she hauled in a paycheck from Pinehearst by being handed files on people and delivering the company's card to them. She began to get an idea of how the place worked, but whenever she would have doubts, Mr. Linderman stepped in to reassurance her. Or threaten. The threat became even more palpable when she was introduced to the reality that her head-boss man could permanently remove her ability, rendering her crippled and helpless. So she fought through her waning enthusiasm and kept up the good-employee act. Only, not *too* good, since the job required such things as stealing ancient formulas and busting people out of prison. But Daphne never saw herself as a good person, so she never felt she could do much else with her life.

The choice was, inevitably, made for her. By a bunch of heroes all high on storming the castle. During the epic Fall of Pinehearst, Daphne was abroad on other business. When she returned, she at first had a hard time believing they were just gone. Even though she ran out, for a while she'd keep looking over her shoulder expecting to get called back any time. But it got longer… and longer… and then life was just normal again.

(All in the Past - 2009)

September 2009

For a year now, Daphne's readjusted to life as a freelancer, once again picking her own jobs (mostly) and completing them in her infamous record time (always). Yet something's oddly different, like how none of the money she picks up seems to be able to stick to her accounts. This may have to do with several new acquaintances, including one affectionately titled "Chief" or other synonyms therein. Since then, though, the novelty began to wear thin and this thief itched for the rush of new habits. Or old ones that have been shelved for a while. Either way, she continued to operate in and out of any city she could run to, unable to slow down long enough to start any kind of normal life for herself. Maybe she never would.

It certainly didn't seem like it, when events like the government coming after evolveds came up, coinciding with her boss' attempts to push their relationship to the next level. The emotionally reluctant speedster finally gave into her own growing feelings, only to have those put on hold when the Alpha Protocol came after her and then those she would consider close if she ever used that term. For the first time, Daphne stepped up to the offer to be a hero by helping organize the rescue of those being transported on the AP trains. Her triumphant evening was marred by two tragedies however— one, that Gene was not one of those on the trains and, two, that her boss/friend never showed up for their rendezvous.

After days of her own searching, Daphne surrendered to the fact that she might need others' assistance. She contacted the bookstore owner Cass and was rewarded with the ghastly information that Peter had been brainwashed by their very enemy, who he was now chilling with. So motivated, the former thief accepted a mission to snoop into AP forerunner Ivory Wynn's business…

2010

Revealed to have been captured by the Alpha Protocol during her disappearance, Daphne's life looks like it's heading straight to a dead-end. Infected wounds, heartless interrogators, and disturbing nightmares plague the speedster while she contemplates if life is worth living having now tasted freedom with her ability. She's interrupted by a timely intervention by Janet, the spastic AP doctor who finally removed the bullet from the speedster's leg, and then by a switch of lifestyle to all the prisoners stuck together in a barracks.

Daphne isn't exactly social during this time, preferring to stare at the TV and not think about it as much as possible; she has no drive to keep her going, feeling like this is just punishment for the things she's done in the past. It just caught up to her finally.

But a transfer to another facility becomes a surprise rescue by the man she believed to not even know her name anymore. At first in denial of her own rescue, and then ready to flee for her lack of faith, Daphne's convinced into staying around to support Peter by his own brother, Nathan. Things are as normal as life in a safehouse can be, but Daphne adjusts until she's comfortable again, with her legs and in a relationship. Secrets and mothers crop up to put dents in her confidence, but a stint on Ward's Island being a true hero and a confession of love from her man put Daphne squarely in the right path.

• On Dec 29th, 2007: Daphne goes to Pinehearst to find Linderman and a new assignment, and gets to play taxi to Cass.
• On Jan 2nd, 2008: A latest assignment is Daphne's portion of the Who We Are montage.
• On Jan 3rd, 2008: Our neighborhood speedster is called in to pull Mohinder out of a bad place.
• On Jan 7th, 2008: A calling card is left for assignment Aileen. Daphne fibs and gets away with it.
• On Jan 8th, 2008: Daphne goes up to the Empire State Building deck and earns herself a Tyson tagalong. She promptly ditches him.
• On Jan 15th, 2008: Pinehearst's speedster meets and harasses its newest desk-geek until a family picture chases her away.
• On Jan 16th, 2008: Much to her surprise, Daphne receives an apology package from Geek. She steals him this in return.
• On Jan 19th, 2008: A personal errand at a pub turns into much more than that when Pinehearst's speedster runs into Usual Suspect #1, Adam
• On Jan 19th, 2008: After 'acquiring' Adam's phone, Daphne takes it back to Geek, hoping for a little technical expertise. Instead, she gets a little too close to home.
• On Feb 9th & 10th, 2008: Pinehearst has made a deal with tribesman Ndugu. Daphne and missionary companion are sent into the Congo to see if they can't help with the child relocation problem. Turns out they can.
• On Feb 18th, 2008: Daphne is tasked with a mission by the head man. She then performs that task but not without a mild hitch. The hitch then becomes more of a full-fledged nuisance when he follows her to the next step. Nothing a fist can't solve, though.
• On April 28th, 2008: Returning from a small break in Paris, Daphne runs into (but not literally) an invisible man. They exchange hard questions.
• On June 2nd, 2008: Mystery man gets tagged 'it'. He also gets a world famous cinnamon bun. Daphne's generosity knows no bounds.
• On June 8th, 2008: Daphne, still trying to haul in her own substantial paycheck, fails to find a mark and then fails to get into the library system thanks to a goodie-goodie
• On Sometime, 2008: Pinehearst's speedster gets sent on a longer-term abroad mission just in time for it to fall down, go boom. She never goes back.
• On Sept 21st, 2008: She finally lets go of that life.

A Year Ago

• On Jan 21st, 2009: Flashbacks reveal that Daphne tries to get back on her feet with an old type of job but ends up having a surreal conversation with some not-Irish plaid-wearing mismatched sock thug.
• On Jan, 2009: Further past memories show a reunion with a certain desk-geek, who no longer has a desk, but still has an illness. They catch up.
• On Jan 22nd, 2009: It is shown how Daphne decided a partner would help spruce up her failing new career as a criminal again. She chooses the debatably lucky Quinn on basis of already knowing how to blackmail her.
• On Jan, 2009: Lured in by tales of pricey things to steal, Daphne goes on a fancy date that turns into a trip to prehistoric life when some Japanese guy shows up to spoil the evening.

Nine Months Ago

• On April 27th, 2009: Now reaping the benefits of a partner, Daphne organizes the heist of old war heirlooms.
• On April 29th, 2009: Our intrepid speedster is finally caught doing what she does best by a man with an almost familiar face. The beginning of a beautiful… something.
• On June 2nd, 2009: In the process of being reformed, Daphne still haunts the old haunt and meets a reporter doing the same.

Six Months Ago

• On August 2nd, 2009: While vacationing at Nigara Falls, Daphne pimps her traveling lifestyle to the blonde bookstore worker, and her otp.
• On August 6th, 2009: After tracking the man for him, Daphne accompanies the dying geek for his last ditch effort to find a cure with a most unlikely source.
• On August 7th, 2009: Busying herself with some charity work, the thief remeets an old victim who becomes a new employer instead.

• On Sept 21st, 2009: Old habits may die hard, but new targets and new methods are the theme of a new year for Daphne.
• On Sept 22nd, 2009: Daphne misses an appointment, causing her sponsor to come looking for her and give her another job.
• On Sept 23rd, 2009: The city attends Meryl and Ben's wedding fiasco, including Daphne, who meets some kid and then doesn't dance with Peter.
• On Sept 25th, 2009: Just trying to do her job, Daphne is hindered by someone else's. (she is not mentioned by name)
• On Sept 26th, 2009: Coming in victorious in another race, this one to Frankfurt, Daphne decides it's time to show Peter what this ability can do for your sight-seeing. She ends up spilling some feelings. And getting to fly!
• On Sept 30th, 2009: Once a thief, always a thief. Daphne can't resist the allure of a new exhibit and calls in the illusionist on her bill to help out.
• On Oct 1st, 2009: Having heard of a certain guy's reputation, Daphne runs by his bar to get what she needs. Hint: It isn't a date with him.
• On Oct 2nd, 2009: The Frick Collection Job. See, list of things Daphne has stolen.
• On Oct 3rd, 2009: Another meeting by. Daphne brushes away concern about the kidnappings and the possibility of this not just being a business relationship.
• On Oct 10th, 2009: Pursued by her own emotional concerns, the thief turns to the one person she might consider even like-minded enough to say these things to.
• On Oct 12th, 2009: Daphne goes to make an anonymous donation to a charity but, 'lo and behold, she isn't the only fast-mover friends with the place. There is talk of plans and faults. And is Daphne giving up her own money?!
• On Oct 13th, 2009: The government finally catches up to the speedster. She wins. But barely. As she flees, she manages to find just what she needs in time. Daphne commits to being a hero for the first time.
• On Oct 17th, 2009: The speedster decides to scope out the refugee situations, starting with Charlotte's Germany hideaway. Then, she runs a couple of errands: the first of which is running down a particular informant, the second of which is checking on possible government funding that has her running into a wanna-be thief who's right behind her.
• On Oct 23rd, 2009: Train Scene Whorage. A very busy speedster starts with the team at the front of the train but, disappointed with her findings, takes off to check the middle car where she sees a familiar face is handling things, so she continues on to the end of the line, a job that has her very briefly stopping by the first rescued group. Daphne then rendezvouses at Peter's chosen location.
• On Oct 23rd/24th, 2009: Having spent all night looking everywhere for Peter, Daphne goes back to the meeting location and waits. And waits. While there, she gets a Rebel message and a new mission.
• 3 weeks: Daphne spends a lot of time by herself running about in attempts to find even a hint of where Peter has gone.
• On Nov 16th, 2009: After initial phone conversations, Daphne decides to finally invest in talking to Cass. She receives direction, finally, and a mission.
• A couple weeks later: DAPHNE VANISHES.

Timeline 2010-Style

• On Jan 17th, 2010: A certain speedster awakens to find herself in a bad situation, remembering a mission that went wrong because of her current questioner. Her fate hangs in the balance! Thinking of where her life has been, the now is even worse.
• On February 14th, 2010: On the verge of losing several things more important than life, the ailing speedster is discovered by the [Janet|jumpiest doctor in existence].
• On February 19th, 2010: Daphne doesn't care about the barracks. Or the TV. Until this dude tries to change the channel. It turns out, they have at least one more thing in common besides prison.
• On February 24th, 2010: A new low for a former speedster. Taken from her bed and forced to do laps, things don't get any prettier when she refuses. To Daphne, nothing can earn cooperation. Especially not Asshat.
• On February 25th, 2010: Returned to her usual spot on the couch, Daphne really doesn't feel like sharing space or enthusiasm with Talks Too Much and Super-Nosy.
• On March 4th, 2010: A field-trip to a new hell is interrupted by a face Daphne thought she would never see again. Oh, and that guy with the socks is there, too. But without the socks.
• On March 6th, 2010: Still haunted by recent events, and unable to justify her mind-set, Daphne tries to do what she does best but there's a small interruption. He still doesn't have the socks. And now he doesn't have cake, either.
• On March 6th, 2010: She stays. The morning consists of an atypical breakfast, and one or both of them having residual nightmares from events past. After a tumultuous route, Daphne decides something very important: she believes in him.
• On March 22nd, 2010: Daphne is there when this funny-haired squirt shows up talking about plans and dangerous things. She knows her boyfriend is going to do something reckless.
• On April 2nd, 2010: Things aren't exactly fuzzy and sunshine when Daphne meets The Mother. There may have been an incident with a formula… and a permanent marker. But other things are brewing.
• On April 13th, 2010: Back to what she does best, Daphne aids in reclaiming stolen property and finding out she stole something a lot more precious. Those three little words come up for one searching heart.
• On April 15th, 2010: Heroes converge on Ward's Island to make sure that evil is not done this day. Then, ecstastic after the success of that evening, a briefly-not-speedy speedster has something she wants to say. She doesn't, though, because this time it's just a clone showing up at her door. Still, she promises something else very important.
• On April 18th, 2010: Done with waiting — because then she might back out — the love-struck speedsters delivers unto the figure of Peter the key to her old life and the three little words she held back on before. All seems well as they celebrate by running away to Paris.
• On May 29th, 2010: After more than a beautiful month with her boyfriend in Paris, Daphne is starting to get suspicious of why they're even there. Not that she doesn't love it. Or him. Her suspicions lead her to test him, and he seems to pass. But it's so much more complicated than that.

Peter aka Boss, Chief, M, Big Hero
Just like one of those lovable Jehovah's witnesses, he showed up at her door preaching one day. At first it was weird but, what do ya know, now they could be thick as thieves. Too bad he isn't one. But there's a certain rapport going. If there wasn't, it'd be a lot easier to ditch it all. Now that she's started opening up to him, the relationship scares her even more. What he started to say this last time scared her off because she doesn't want to get into that kind of thing. Right? If only everything was simple again. But who ever expected the thing to simplify it to be an attack by the government. Facing her own imminent capture, she finally has to face that she'd be miserable leaving things as they were with him and, finding safety in his arms, she concedes to her own feelings. At least for a good movie and some popcorn… and some mini-golf… and one precious kiss. Her new decision to be onboard with his heroic antics was threatened by his lack of appearance at heroic's end, but news of his brainwashing soon had her running to do what she can — and right into trouble. Told that he didn't want to see her, she's beginning to lose faith that he'll ever show.

(Friend Like Me)

Quinn aka Q // If there was something going on then it definitely wouldn't be anything illegal or having to do with mail of any color. The point is, the two are working together - nevermind the circumstances - and their small talks are the closest she's ever gotten to confiding in a girl friend. She might never say it, but the small conversations are crucial; without the illusionist, she'd really have no one else to turn to when things got tough, and she knows how lonely that can easily be. Briefly, Daphne wondered if she should be suspicious of her for betraying her location to the government, leading to further contemplation of the nature of their relationship - and the lies within.

Gene aka Geek // Some Pinehearst worker-bee there was a conversation with once or twice… They were both times completely awkward, but the subject of family is usually a touchy one. He gave her this whole fruitbasket thing - like, who does that anymore? - and she gave him a book. About Legos. He seemed to like it, which is great, except that's all that ever happened before Pinehearst went away. She kind of liked to think he wasn't in the building at boom-time. It was later confirmed when the two met up again outside an anime store. He let her help out tracking down a dangerous man to perform his miracle cure — one Daphne is both proud and jealous of, considering her own condition. Once she heard he was captured, that became less important than her guilt over caring that he's been captured. His condition was a big part of getting her to change her mind about being good. Not finding him the train cars was her greatest annoyance before something with someone even closer to her eclipsed that.
