Heidi is awesome.
History
A New York native, Heidi has moved from middle class to upper class in her lifetime, but still maintains a down-to-earth manner. Click each section for a more detailed history.
A New York native, and from a family that was roughly middle class, Heidi really didn't know a lot of hardship though her early years. She was taught to appreciate the fact that not everyone had everything they needed, and learned humility and charity from her parents, though she never had the misfortune of falling victim to tragedy through her youth. Sheltered, some would call it, though Heidi wasn't unobservant. Even if she didn't learn the hard way, she still /learned./
Her parents put her through public schools in a small town. When she was old enough, she worked at her dad's hardware store before attending a state university to earn a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. Always a decent student, she excelled in academics, though was never really interested in physical activities. Drama club was a favourite, and she was on the debate team for a year. It was fun and challenging.
During her last year of school, her friends persuaded her to attend the annual Spring military ball at the Naval academy over in Annapolis. She wasn't a fan of dancing, though her fellow students thought the fresh atmosphere would do her good. She did try her best not to be a wallflower, though she couldn't help it. However, it was because of her reluctance that she happened to bump into a man named Nathan Petrelli… The friendship started from there, and continued through his career in the Navy. When he wasn't home, they wrote letters. When he was around, they spent as much time together as they could. Both were cautious, neither wanted to rush things, so they dated for a good couple years before they finally married. It was around that point that Nathan started his legal and political career.
Given that he made enough money to support them both, Heidi generally stayed at home and took care of the house. This gave her a decided advantage when it came time for children, and she could devote her full resources to their care and upbringing. Simon and Monty became sweet, well-mannered children as a result.
Nathan's family seemed to like Heidi well enough, and Heidi appreciated their company. Angela Petrelli occasionally butted heads with Her, but given that Nathan's wife was fully capable of holding her own without being insulting, the two became mostly friendly to each other. Though she didn't see Nathan's father very often, they also got along well enough.
Heidi felt that Peter - Nathan's younger sibling - was the brother she never had. She thought he was awesome, admired his dreams, randomly teased him relentlessly… but it was all in good fun. Besides, the kids loved him and he was a great role model for them, and the occasional babysitter when the need arose, when he wasn't busy with his own schooling. It was nice to talk to someone who wasn't solely political-minded.
All things considered, Heidi hit the jackpot where it came to Nathan's family, and couldn't complain at all.
Things started getting a little weird when Nathan made the decision to run for congress. Things were stressful, and schedules were demanding, yet they still found time to attend Peter's graduation party, and there, they had an excellent time. It was on the way back home that someone attempted to run Nathan off the road; he suddenly vanished from the car, leaving Heidi alone to crash into a highway barrier. The accident tore through the nerves in her back, and after a marathon surgery, she was told that she'd likely never walk again.
Relegated to a wheelchair, possibly for the rest of her life, Heidi was hurt, angry, and at the time, blamed a lot of other circumstances for the accident. That was including - but not limited to - Nathan's disappearance and the fact that they were out that night in the first place. She didn't want to see anyone, stopped caring about her family… It wouldn't be surprising for an ordinary person, but this first hardship was extreme, and it kind of took Heidi by surprise. She wasn't prepared for it, didn't want to live it.
It took a couple months after she left the hospital to start to brighten again. It wasn't a death sentence, she could still feel and love and take care of her kids. It was hard to accept the fact that she was seen as a 'weakness' by her own husband, but she took it in stride like she always did, confident that he still cared for her. Things were getting back to a more normal state when unfortunate circumstances claimed the life of Nathan's father.
It was hard on the family. Peter seemed to spiral downward, though Heidi found it hard to believe that he was suicidal. Nathan himself became distant, there were rumours that he had a relationship with another woman, though she trusted him when he and Peter made it clear that the woman was simply talking to Nathan about helping his brother. She wanted to trust, she tried, and because she had to hold things together, she convinced herself that if anything were happening, surely Nathan would tell her. Besides that, she loved him, and after the accident, she couldn't even contemplate the idea of fighting about something so trivial.
Even if he'd slipped, they were still a family.
After Nathan met with Linderman in their home, after the man she called a 'thief' took her hands, she suddenly found herself able to walk again. This was definitely a miracle, given that Heidi had resigned herself to the fact that, if she could even walk again, it would be an extremely long road. It was at this point that she started putting things together, started subconsiously suspecting that things were /off,/ but she was unable to put her finger on exactly what.
The election happened, Nathan won by a landslide, Heidi left town with the boys for awhile. Her husband flew Peter into the stratosphere and stopped New York from going nuclear. Needless to say, she was surprised when she returned to find him so badly disfigured, and despite the fact that she wanted to be there for him like he was there for her…
The stress on the kids was too much. When Nathan was discharged from the hospital for private care at home, he asked her to take the kids and go somewhere for awhile, so he could recover, and Simon and Monty could come to terms with what happened. She felt that she could take it, that their sons could take it, but she still respected his wishes. Their parting was mostly wordless after that… There wasn't much more to say. A vacation in Florida seemed reasonable enough. Heidi gave him a few months, waiting for some word from Nathan, before deciding that enough was enough and returning to New York.

Relationships
There are so many people to meet. After all, it's friggin' NEW YORK.
- Nathan Petrelli :: Their relationship has recently hit several rough patches - first, the fact that Nathan is a mutant (Though the term is used lovingly) And more importantly, the fact that Nathan carried on an affair very recently. Heidi suspects more - she's come to realise that the blonde 'therapist' Nathan went to see on Peter's behalf probably was not a therapist - but she doesn't bring that up. Despite the fact that Nathan shook Heidi's trust to the point where she felt the need to test him over his loyalty, she's gotten past that as much as possible, and still loves him very much. Even if he has his demons, he's her rock, and wouldn't know what to do without him. Even today, she still wishes - and hopes - that he will open up a little more to her, though she'll tolerate the fact that he has secrets. After all, a leopard can't change its spots, but she's fully of the opinion that it can learn to trust. Heidi and Nathan have two children - Simon and Monty. Simon seems to take more after Nathan, where Monty is more like Heidi.
- Peter Petrelli :: The little brother that Heidi never had. Where Nathan has always been extremely grounded (ironically), Peter's always had his head in the clouds. After they first met and Heidi got to know him more, she took her role as Big Sister very seriously, which included defending Peter from EVIL, teasing him mercilessly, and giving him and embarrassing nickname that she still uses to this day. As they've both gotten older, Peter's become more of a confidant and a friend; she will refer to him as her brother more often than she calls him her brother-in-law. He's the one defending people from evil now, of course, but Heidi will - and does - still do anything for him. He's seen her cry, he's been her shoulder when Nathan couldn't, and he's probably the kindest, most selfless person that Heidi's ever known. Besides all that, to her, he's completely amazing - a sponge of abilities that seem to never end. Since he healed Monty's broken arm, Monty has decided that he wants to grow up to be a healer. Heidi approves.
Friends
- Elena Gomez :: A strange friendship… One that probably never would have happened if not for one event - Heidi's kidnapping. She credits Elena with her rescue, since she was there when the event initially took place. It would have been so easy for the Latina to call the police and walk away from the whole thing, but she didn't. And you can't go through something like that without becoming friends, in Heidi's opinion. Elena sees Heidi as a confidant, and the feeling is mutual, despite the age difference. Elena was there when Heidi first discovered the abilities of others, she was there during the marital difficulties with Nathan. In turn, Heidi was able to assist Elena when one aspect of the younger girl's power went haywire at a party. This did result in a kiss, but both of them have chosen to forget that forever. Nathan was jealous.
- Cass Aldric :: Sort of an accomplice, definitely more than an acquaintance. Cass and Heidi had initially planned to sabotage a game of Spin the Bottle between Peter and Elena to get them over themselves, though that was before Peter ran away to the past. They seem to get along well enough. Notably, Heidi met Cass while Elena was running around in a chicken suit. In public.
- Claire Bennett :: Nathan's daughter, and the source of a great deal of mental conflict for Heidi. She likes the blonde-haired girl, though, and can't blame her for Nathan's past misdeeds. Sometime in the recent past, Heidi asked Claire if she'd be willing to baby sit Simon and Monty sometimes… She wants the kids to know their older sister, even if Claire now inadvertently represents Nathan's unfaithfulness. Heidi is protective of Claire, even if she's aware that she can heal just about anything. It has to do with really wanting to have a daughter, and Claire, being Nathan's daughter, is just about as close as she'll ever get to that.
- Ramon Gomez & Family :: Heidi doesn't know Ramon too well, but he's had a significant impact on her life already. As a defense against John Carter, he directed her through a telepathic command to be true to herself. As a result, she's resistant to abilities like hypnotism and persuasion. She also likes Ramon's other kids - Manny, Luis, and Juanita. Regarding Luis, Heidi introduced him to the Sandwich of Doom, and the world spontaneously combusted. Also, Heidi is going to steal Juanita and KEEP HER.
- Desiree Russo :: Only met briefly here and there, but Desi treated Monty's arm on the scene when he broke it, which earns the Southerner about a million gold stars.
- Alyssa McAlister :: Accidentally caused a chain reaction which broke Monty's arm. Oops. Heidi attempted to help her when it was revealed that she had the literal power of persuasion, but hasn't seen the DJ in awhile.
- Mara Damaris :: Carried on an affair with Nathan. When they met, Mara asked to see Heidi's wedding ring, rather than do what Heidi would consider the sensible thing and make a quick exit. Mara had a vision, and eventually the fact that she and Nathan were having a relationship was revealed. Heidi was horrified; more than anything, this was the event that caused her to question her trust in people, and led to her confrontation with Elle. (See below.) Heidi attempted to forgive Mara, but it didn't quite go as planned.
- Elle Bishop :: Scary. Scary girl with lightning. Seemed nice enough at first, but after Elle shocked the hell out of Elena, Heidi couldn't trust her. Elle and Heidi came close to blows - and Heidi would have been the loser - when Elle ended up watching Simon and Monty. Their mother didn't like that too much. Oops. Elle remains the only person Heidi actively dislikes… Even if she normally gives everyone second, third, even more chances than they deserve, she can't take the risk when it comes to her family and friends.
Quotes
- "…Don't ask me to leave again. Don't do that to the boys."
- "But I don't want you to think you have to hide me away, okay? We already went through that, and I didn't like it. I'm going to learn how to protect myself."
- "You say healing is one of the best things someone can do, but it's not just all about fixing cuts and scrapes."
- "After we talked, we went to the theatre to see The Incredibles. It… Wasn't quite the suspension of disbelief it was when I took Simon and Monty to see it."
Trivia
