"Mara" Damaris is a member of New York's Finest, a homicide detective in the NYPD. She suffers from fainting spells, due to her recently manifested power of Psychometry. As a general rule, she keeps to herself the visions accompanying her swooning. Especially when those visions concern future events.
History
Kaydence Lee Damaris was born in New York City, where her Cajun father and UK-born mother were studying at the time. She was only three years old when her parents divorced. She spent the school year with her father in Louisiana and summers with her mother in Britain. In middle school, she developed a keen interest for the justice system, deciding she wanted to become a lawyer or a judge. After high school, Mara returned to England to live with her mother full-time with the intention of attending university there.
She rather unsuccessfully attempted to study law for a year at Oxford, but quickly discovered she had neither enough funding nor the attention span for the amount of research that went into the legal profession. Deciding her place was not in the courtroom, she shifted her pursuits to law enforcement. She relocated to her parents' alma mater in New York. There, she applied herself to her new passion with a renewed eagerness. Mara had decided to join the police force. She struggled as a member of the boys' club, but proved herself both physically and mentally capable of keeping up with her male peers, earning a begrudging sort of respect, and even admiration from others. Unlike some women in her position, Mara doesn't see others of her gender climbing the ranks as potential threats, but rather as good omens. She's very comfortable in her position as a homicide detective for the NYPD.
In December of 2006, Mara began suffering from fainting spells. They struck seemingly at random and no medical reason could be discovered. She was moved from active duty to the more clerical side of police work, spending less time pursuing suspects and more time fact checking and conferring with the medical examiner's office, as she's never been one to show any squeamishness when it comes to autopsies. Originally, Mara's fainting spells would knock her out for several hours. This "downtime" shortened over time, giving the illusion that whatever was ailing her was beginning to diminish. However, she made no mention of the visions that had began to coincide with each spell. Acquiring a copy of "Activating Evolution" written by Chandra Suresh, she was intrigued by the theories presented.
In February, a Japanese man claiming to have knowledge of who killed Virginia Gray, whose murder she and her partner had been trying very hard to solve, approached her at her station. He came to warn her of a man, a murderer who takes the abilities of others. Growing annoyed with the lack of any concrete proof that anything he was telling her was true, she demanded to know what was in the tube the foreigner was carrying. Touching the man's honest-to-goodness katana dropped the detective to the floor, unconscious from the most elaborate vision she'd experienced since realising what was happening to her. That day and that man would change Mara's life forever.
That day, Hiro Nakamura told Mara Damaris that she is a hero.
Abilities
Mara's powers have only just begun to manifest in the past six months. Currently, she sees unbidden images at random when she comes in physical contact with an object. She appears to faint when struck by her visions of either the past or future of the object she's touched. She is unable to keep herself from having visions, though she has recently discovered that she is able to induce visions she wouldn't normally have on her own. With the help of an experimental drug developed by Mohinder Suresh, Mara is able to experience visions without passing out.

April 2007
- 04/01/07: Woken up by a phone call from Mohinder to inform her that he and Molly are safe, though Gray is back in action. Mara in turn makes phone calls to inform Peter and Hiro. Parkman comes by to tell her to start pulling her own weight and makes her think. Hiro answers her call and submits to her request to take her to her apartment. In hopes of changing the future by knowing it, she touches the grandfather clock in her bedroom that Desireé saw in her vision.
- 04/05/07: Has her first fight with Nathan after discovering his wife has returned home and realising that their affair needs to end.
- 04/06/07: A confession is made, as well as a decision. Definitely don't tell Nathan.
- 04/08/07: Returns home, only to be attacked by Gabriel Gray mere hours later. She is rescued by Peter and Nathan, the latter flies her to safety while the former stays to do battle and subsequently burn down her flat. When Nathan leaves Mara at the apartment she was supposed to be hiding at in order to retrieve an injured Peter, she leaves an unapologetic voicemail on his mobile and seizes her chance to disappear without a trace.

- 04/12/07: Says her farewells to Nathan and Peter via packages delivered to Petrelli the Younger's apartment.

May 2007
- 05/12/07: Returns to New York after being hidden away to heal her leg enough to walk with a cane. She visits Nathan and makes the decision to end their non-relationship after having a vision in which he doesn't get a divorce because she stops seeing him. She also discovers a rather disconcerting side effect of the injections Mohinder developed for her. She immediately runs to tell Peter, seeking validation that she's done the right thing by tearing her own heart out.
- 05/13/07: Drowning her sorrows at the Fly By Night Cocktail Bar, Mara encounters Desmond Cusick and goes home with him.
- 05/14/07: Sees Mohinder about her concerns in respect to her ability. Chiefly that she's afraid she's losing control over it entirely.
- 05/15/07: Spots Jane Forrest playing on the street and stops to listen. She eyes Benjamin Winters and, posing as an out-of-towner, gets him to let her into his apartment by flirting with him.
- 05/16/07: Meets Heidi Petrelli for the first time. The cat is let out of the bag when Mara has a vision of Nathan and Heidi's wedding day and the guilt forces her to reveal more than she should have. She consequently goes home to drink herself half to death, vomiting and passing out on the floor of her living room. Not necessarily in that order.
- 05/17/07: Nursing a hangover at the Den of Iniquity, Mara finds herself nursing her broken heart as well, with the help of Jack Derex.
- 05/18/07: Meets with Mohinder to further test her abilities. He insists she stay at Kirby Plaza for observation. While roaming the halls in an attempt to memorise the layout of the building, she runs into Natalie Foster and Orion Granger. The latter of which she's extremely wary of. The distrust is mutual.
- 05/19/07: Discovers the therapist she's been ordered to attend mandatory therapy sessions with before she's allowed to return to duty works for The Company. Rather disconcerting, that. Rather than go home after Mohinder determines she no longer need be under observation, she elects to spend the night with Jack.
- 05/20/07: Attends her first therapy session with Doctor Eames and runs into Benjamin Winters in the waiting area afterward. What do two people say to each other when they discover they have the same therapist?
- 05/22/07: Recognises Adam from visions of his life as Takezo Kensei that she once had from touching Hiro's sword. The two share drinks and serious conversation before the immortal coaxes the woman back to his place so he can see what sort of visions she'll have.
- 05/23/07: Approached by Heidi while trying to enjoy some coffee and self-pity. She's surprised to discover the Wife forgives the Other Woman.
- 05/27/07: Keeping vigil over a comatose Peter is interrupted when the inevitable happens and Nathan comes to visit at the same time. After a tense discussion about where they stand, in which nothing truly gets resolved, Mara returns to Kirby Plaza for more testing with Mohinder. They are interrupted by Molly, who informs them she is worried about Micah Sanders and his mother, Niki. Mara agrees to track down Niki and help Micah if he needs it to ease Molly's troubled mind.
- 05/28/07: Having hopped the first plane to Nevada, Mara uses her connections to help track down Niki and convinces the LVPD that the NYPD has Miss Sanders under control. She approaches Niki and offers her help to avoid both the police and The Company, even though helping her may be dangerous on both fronts.
- 05/29/07: Unwinds after her serious trip to Vegas by attending a party thrown by Jaden Cain. The unwinding doesn't truly happen until well after midnight, however…
- 05/30/07: …when she ends up at the Den of Iniquity with Jack and later joined by Nathan, both dressed as members of Poison, while she's dressed as Missus Lovett of Sweeney Todd fame.
June 2007
- 06/04/07: Strives for a bit of normalcy when Peter drops by to thank her for sitting at his bedside while he was comatose. He gives her her first decoration for her new apartment and the two discuss Mara's fears. The discussion about the comforts of home causes Mara to long for coffee from Common Grounds in her old stomping ground of Midtown West. Upon leaving the shop, she is shocked to discover Hiro Nakamura has just returned, apparently from the time of dinosaurs. She calms the man down and insists upon bringing him back to her apartment for a shower, waffles, and some new clothes. Though she felt uneasy at the time, she didn't realise she was spotted by Agent Granger, who subsequently ordered she and the time traveler to be tailed.
- 06/11/07: Decides to spend some time at her favourite cocktail bar and runs into Jack. The two drink and dance before he takes her home.
- 06/12/07: After months of asking herself Should I, or Shouldn't I? Mara finally tells her partner about her abilities. She's pleasantly surprised to find Judah supportive.
- 06/16/07: A shopping trip to replace the laptop she had destroyed in the fire at her flat proves exciting as she thwarts a robbery.
- 06/23/07: At Mohinder's request, Mara accompanies the geneticist to Primatech's Hartsdale facility to see to a patient. While there, the doctor receives a call for the detective that sends the world crashing down around her.
- 06/27/07: Informs Jack and Peter that she's being watched.
- 06/29/07: Nathan is the next to find out about Mara's situation. She asks for him to stay late into the night so she can finally sleep for the first time in days, to which he agrees. NO SEX HAPPENS.
July 2007
- 07/01/07: Returning to Jonathan's store to finally buy herself a new computer, the tech informs her that her machine will be on the house.
- 07/07/07: Doctor Applebaum meets with Mara to discuss a certain evolved serial killer and how best to avoid his notice. Knowing she's been watched, Mara tells her that the best way to avoid discovery is to avoid her.
- 07/08/07: Nathan turns to Mara for her expertise on being a hunted woman - though Mara thinks he's asking her as a homicide detective - asking her how killers pick their victims. She's chilled when her phone rings and her stalker reveals himself to be standing across the street. Watching her. Nathan flees with Mara, affording her the privacy of the sky to panic before taking her home so she can get some rest.
- 07/09/07: Wakes up to discover a bloody message has been scrawled over her walls. While attempting to be a good policewoman and gather evidence, rather than give herself over to fear, Niki Sanders calls and asks for a favour. Shortly thereafter, she calls Mohinder to ask for his - and the Company's - expertise in the matter. He demands she relocate with him to Hartsdale and for once, she isn't reluctant to agree. He also informs her that she needs to stop ignoring the fact that she owes the Company a hefty favour for hiding her during April and May. He convinces her (or maybe coerces in his own special way) to meet with the higher-ups to discuss what they want their Serial Killer Bait to do next.
- 07/12/07: A couple days after the incident, Mara returns home to pack up her belongings to properly move out of the vandalised apartment. She asks Nathan to accompany her on this task and informs him of what happened. He takes it marginally better than she did, in that he doesn't throw up. An envelope is delivered via courier while she's packing and she discovers that her would-be killer photographed her while she slept. Creepy. After Nathan's gone, Mara's prompted to ask Peter if she can stay at his place for the night before driving to Hartsdale in the morning. In return, he makes a request of her.
- 07/13/07: Meets with Bob Bishop at Mohinder's urging. (She agrees to go through with the meeting if he agrees to give her a few doses of ability-nullifying pills.) He orders her to retreat to a farmhouse upstate, much to her chagrin. Being bait is no fun. Especially when you don't get all the rights, privileges and obligations of a full Company agent. But the lack of agent status brings on less guilt, so it evens out.
- 07/14/07: Funnels pills from Mohinder to Niki. Later that night, an attack of conscience causes Mara to reveal to Peter that she's allowing the Company to use her.
- 07/15/07: Mohinder and Mara discuss the state of her exile from New York City as mandated by the Company. He proceeds to drag her out on his rounds with him. A necessary evil, as well as a chance for the Psychometer to see what really happens in the holding cells of Primatech's Hartsdale facility. While checking up on patients, she recognises Megan Deatley as Lachlan's sister.
- 07/17/07: Informs Peter that Megan Deatley is fine, and suggests he pass it along to her brother. She considers it a pre-emptive measure, designed to keep Lachlan from doing something rash. It later turns out to have been a mistake on her part. A huge mistake.
- 07/20/07: Tamara is tracked down, if only because she allows herself to be found.
- 07/21/07: Meets Lee and lies to him about what it is exactly that she does. She finds it to be a bit closer to the truth than she'd like to admit, though.
- 07/23/07: Mohinder confirms for Mara that she's on the list of suspected culprits responsible for the leak of Megan's whereabouts. She assures him that she isn't the leak, naturally. Still uneasy, she calls a meeting with Nathan and asks for his help.
- 07/24/07: Deciding that the girl doesn't get nearly enough interaction with people that aren't Detective Parkman or Doctor Suresh, Mara takes it upon herself to visit Molly and give the girl a very blue makeover.
- 07/25/07: After a stern talking-to by the man in charge, Mara agrees to stay put in Schenectady, in the hopes that her presence there will lure out Gray.
August 2007
- 08/29/07: After a month upstate, Mara checks in after a particularly rough assignment. She decides to self-medicate at the Della Rosa, where she runs into Eliana Pasternack and a man she finds to be rather familiar, though she can't place his face. She introduces herself to him as her chosen alias of Kate Parker. Later that night, she finds herself sharing time with Matt Parkman. The time away from each other seems to have changed their dynamic for the better.
- 08/30/07: Checking in at the Hartsdale facility, Mara discovers the man she met the previous night in the bar is actually Agent Lawrence Church. She informs him that she operates under the name of Agent Parker, though she does tell him her real name. She is also surprised to discover an old friend, Felix Ivanov, has found himself a… guest of the Company. After assuring him she'll take care of him, and sharing stories embarrassing to the both of them, she offers Lawrence a bribe for his silence. The two go on a date instead.
- 08/31/07: Blessedly, Mara finds herself reassigned and no longer exiled to Schenectady. Her new assignment? Keeping Felix Ivanov in line. Waiting upstate to be killed may have been easier. The two discuss their demons, and he asks her what hold The Company has over her that she would work as an agent for them.
Relationships
- Judah Demsky: Partner. Best friend. Unrequited love of Mara's life.
- Nathan Petrelli: Mistake. Biggest regret. The first man Mara's allowed herself to fall in love with in years. Heartbreaker.

- Hiro Nakamura: The light in the dark. First one to cause Mara to think of her abilities as a godsend.
- Jack Derex: Real convenient shag. Sort of friend. Reliable sort. Friend. Lover.
- Mohinder Suresh: Crush. No sparks here. "Personal" doctor. Friend. Colleague. Partner.
- Ed Boone: Co-conspirator. The Clyde to Mara's Bonnie. She's devastated to have lost him.
- Felix Ivanov: Drinking buddy. He was a detective working mob cases while she was just an officer in homicide. They worked together on the NYPD a couple of times.
- Tamara Brooks: Runaway. Possible prophetess. Mara expects to find her in a gutter someday.
- Matt Parkman: Fellow detective. On-again-off-again bane of Mara's existence. Scary telepathic motherfucker.

- Ethan "Holly" Holcombe: Comic relief. Sender of great get-well-soon cards.
- Viola Holcombe: Lieutenant. Boss. Sometimes they can look past this and be friends.
- Noah Bennet: The Man in the Horn-Rimmed Glasses. A mystery.
- Lachlan Deatley: Shot in his presence twice. By the same guy. Trouble magnet?
- Desmond Cusick: Another convenient shag. A gorgeous hunk of man who looks fantastic lounging on a piano wearing only a Come Hither stare.
- Heidi Petrelli: Will make with the murder before Gray can. The Wife. Very scary for that reason alone.
- Mariska Dmitryeva: The woman in Felix's life. Just can't quite seem to get along with her, though.
- Mister Hendrickson: Shot out her bloody knee. Must die.
- Gabriel Gray: Sworn enemy. Murderer. The stuff of Mara's nightmares and her favourite unhealthy obsession.

Trivia
- Mara is actually a nickname derived from her last name, Damaris. However, the two are pronounced differently. (MAR-ah Da-MARE-is)
- Splitting her formative years between Louisiana and the United Kingdom has afflicted Mara with a most unfortunate accent.
- Rumours circulating around the NYPD have suggested that her partner, Judah, is gay. Mara cannot confirm or deny this, though she firmly believes that he is not. Of course, this may be wishful thinking, as the younger detective harbours a secret crush on her partner.
- The ringtone for Mara's personal BlackBerry is Grace Kelly by Mika.
- Favourite colour is purple. All notes that aren't submitted in an official capacity are taken down in purple ink.
- Mara has a plan. And she's not telling you what it is it got shot to hell.
- Favourite drink is a Tom Collins Jack and Cherry Pepsi gin and tonic a Harvey Wallbanger.

There was one man she truly loved
He took everything but a bearskin rug
Now and then it's clear to me
That need is love and
Love is need
This is not about love
'Cause I am not in love
In fact, I can't stop
Falling out
I check my palms, the cracks in the sidewalk
My visions and my dreams
I cross all my fingers
That you'll be someone who won't be forgotten
What was your question? I've got the answer
There are no signs, there are no stars aligned
No amulets, not a charm
To bring you back to my arms
There's just this human heart
It's built with this human flaw
What was your question?
Love is the answer
How long can a girl be tortured by you?
And how long before my dignity is reclaimed?
And how long can a girl be haunted by you?
Soon, I'll grow up and I won't even flinch at your name
I think I'm drowning
Asphyxiated
I wanna break the spell that you've created
You're something beautiful
A contradiction
I wanna play the game
I want the friction
You will be the death of me
I wanted freedom
Bound and restricted
I try to give you up
But I'm addicted
Now that you know I'm trapped
Sense of elation
You'd never dream of breaking this fixation
You will squeeze the life out of me
Bury it, I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground, you can't stop it screaming out
How did it come to this?
Do I attract you? Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty? Am I too flirty?
Do I like what you like?
How can I help you? How can I help it?
How can I help what you think?
Hello my baby, you're not my baby
Putting my life on the brink
Why don't you like me? Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like yourself?
Should I bend over? Should I look older just to be put on your shelf?
I keep goin' over and over again the never ending places I never been
No one's catching on
Calling my bluff
The devil made me, only we've never met
The truth always has three sides (What'd you do? Say it with a smile, boy)
Mine, yours, and how it went (Making us all forget)
The truth's always been a lie (What'd you do? Say it with a smile, boy)
And I'm never telling it (Making us all forget)
Making you all forget (Making us all forget)
Making us all forget
Swear to God
Although I've been here before
He's just too hard to ignore
Masculine, he spins a spell
I think he'd wear me well
Where's my moral parallel?
I have told all of my enemies very politely to go home
I have seen all of your remedies, now won't you let me please go home?
I've been acting irresponsibly, for what could possibly go wrong?
I have choked on all your remedies, now won't you let me please go home?
I can't find anything to be sad about
They say I'm doomed but I feel fine
But if I'm sitting here lonely, with no one to hold me
At least I'll have my health
I'm trying to control myself
Sometimes I cannot take this place
Sometimes it's my life I can taste
Sometimes I cannot feel my face
You'll never see me fall from grace
Something takes a part of me
You and I were meant to be
A cheap fuck for me to lay
Something takes a part of me
Flesh wound, flesh wound
With medication, it will fade
Should I assume that someone hears me when I pray?
Love, full of hate
Don't you love how I break?
Screwed up, used up
Crumpled, lying on the floor
Fucked up, shut up
All you did back then was score
I'm feeling weak
Missing parts
Incomplete
You're more than a fan, looking for a man
But you end up with one-night-stands
He could be your whole life, if you got past one night
But that part never goes right
In the morning you're vexed
He's on to the next
And you didn't even get no taste
Don't be too upset
If they call you a skank
'Cause like the news, every day you'll get pressed
Without girls like you, there'd be no fun
We'd go to the club and not see anyone
Without girls like you, there's no nightlife
All those men just go home to their wives
Don't be mad at me
'Cause you're pushing thirty
And your old tricks no longer work
You should have known from the jump
That you always get dumped
So dust off your fuck me pumps
I've got it down to an art
Lonely sex with a desperate heart
Is the way to get over someone
Just to get under someone else
I love you
But I gotta stay true
My morals got me on my knees
I'm begging, please, stop playing games
Now you think that I will be something on the side
But you got to understand I need a man
Who can take my hand, yes I do
I don't know what this is
But you got me good
Just like you knew you would
I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell
You got me begging you for mercy
Why won't you release me?
And if words are just hollow birds, flying along, singing a song?
What would they do, if they just knew what we could do?
Oh, if they just knew
I know it's mad, but if I go to hell
Will you come with me, or just leave?
I know it's mad, but if the world were ending
Would you kiss me, or just leave me?
Just leave me.
Watching me like you never watch no one
Don't tell me that you didn't try and check out my bum
Cause I know that you did
Cause your friend told me that you liked it
Gave me those pearls and I thought they were ugly
Though you try to tell me that you never loved me
I know that you did
'Cause you said it and you wrote it down
Dancing at discos
Eating cheese on toast
Yeah you make me merry, make me very, very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around
So I learnt from you
I can be alone
I can watch a sunset on my own
Sitting in restaurants
Thought we were so grown up
But I know now that we were not the people
That we turned out to be
Chatting on the phone
Can't take back those hours
But I won't regret
'Cause you can grow flowers
From where dirt used to be
Dancing at discos
Eating cheese on toast
Yeah you make me merry, make me very, very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around
So I learnt from you
