Namir is a member of NYPD's Emergency Services Unit (the near-equivalent of SWAT), specializing in hostage situations and similar tactical emergencies. He is a native of Israel who moved to New York when he was still young. Though he was once a practicing Muslim and still cleaves to some of the core beliefs, he has since fallen from the faith and does not pursue it as strenuously.

History

Namir Dayan was born the youngest of two children in Ramat HaSharon, Israel on November 16th 1970. His father was an architect and a Muslim, making the family a minority in their native land. Namir grew up immersed in his faith, ingrained with humility and devotion to Allah and a sense of the true values of Islam. However, life in Israel was hardly easy for the small family. When Namir turned twelve years old, his father was offered and accepted a job with an engineering firm in New York, and the Dayans pulled up stakes and moved across the ocean.

In New York, life was hectic as the family tried to settle in. The chaos was made all the worse when Arif Dayan was knifed to death eight months after the Dayans had arrived in the United States. The blow was harsh for the wife and two sons he left behind. Fahd Dayan — 17 years old at the time — immediately dropped out of school and sought employment to help support his family, while Namir was encouraged to continue his studies. This encouragement paid off when he graduated from high school at the age of 18. He wasn't out of school for long before he began attending Herkimer County Community College, majoring in a degree in criminal justice. It was during his college years that he began to withdraw from the Muslim faith, and by the time he acquired his degree two years later, he was largely inactive in the religion. When he graduated from Herkimer, however, he had accomplished more than just an advanced education.

Namir's roommate was a notorious hound during the last year of Namir's college career. When he brought home his conquests, he was never discreet, and they were never quiet. As such, Namir spent many a night in the uncomfortable darkness listening to the sounds of his roommate and his enthusiastic guests enjoying themselves not too far away. Naturally, he hated this arrangement, but as his roommate was the only person he could find to share the rent with, it was an evil he had to endure. On such nights, however, he began to notice that the more he wished for the noises to stop, the quieter and quieter they seemed to get. After several months of this, Namir found that if he wished for it enough, the noises would stop completely. Thinking that it was just a figment of his imagination, he didn't consider it anything highly unusual.

After graduating from Herkimer, Namir changed directions and joined the Army as an MP. He endured six years in the service, and during that time he discovered that his ability to totally shut out his roommate's night-noises had become applicable to any and all sounds. He secretly and discreetly experimented during his time in the military, and by the time he left the service at the age of 26, he was quite adept at his inherent abilities.

A few months after leaving the Army, Namir moved back to New York and applied to join the NYPD. He was accepted and enthusiastically threw himself into his work, catching the eye of his superiors. He worked in a few precincts as a beat cop and even worked as a mounted officer for some time, but he didn't find his niche until three years after the events of September 11th, when he applied to the Emergency Services Unit. There, he specialized in hostage situations and similar tactical emergencies, and he was very good at what he did. It soon became apparent that Namir was extremely stealthy.

During one incident in which a father holed himself up in his apartment with his two daughters and a gun, Namir and a few others in his unit were sent in to diffuse the situation. Namir opted to go in alone through the air vents, despite fears that the noises would tip off the erratic hostage-holder inside. Of course, the noises were no problem to Namir, who soon took the man by surprise and disarmed him. This incident earned him the nickname "the Ninja of the NYPD".

One Year Later…

After an eventful honeymoon that was the start of an otherwise relatively calm marriage, Namir and Samantha have been more or less living as average people do when they're Muslim and Jewish and married and living in Greenwich Village. During the course of the year, Namir's mother died of a sudden stroke, which was a devastating loss. Due to this and his marriage to Sam, he and his brother, Fahd, have grown a little more distant, though Zaina still maintains regular contact with the couple. Recently, Namir and Sam decided to try for a baby.

Ability

Namir has the ability to manipulate sound vibrations, effectively allowing him to adjust the overall volume of noise around him and even minorly alter their properties. His maximum reach is 250 yards in all directions, however his degree of control weakens the further away the sound is. At his maximum range of 250 yards, he's able to raise or lower the volume only about ten decibels (about the same volume as rustling leaves or calm breathing). The closer the sound is to Namir's body, the more control he has over it. Within a range of about 30 yards, he can increase or decrease the volume of sound as much as 120 decibels (loud enough to cause hearing damage after a short exposure, or soft enough to dampen anything louder than a jet engine). Alcohol, drugs, and certain situations that either require intense focus or otherwise detract focus from his powers weaken his ability to exert control (and can sometimes cause him to accidentally lose control).

Stunts

These are stunts Namir can currently +roll.

  • Not With a Bang: At a range of up to 250 yards Namir can decrease the volume levels by up to ten decibels, which is roughly the sound of rustling leaves or quiet breathing. This extreme can lead to severe headaches and temporary loss of balance on his part, though this is assuming he is pushing his limits. For anything that is closer than the 250 yard maximum, Namir need only roll above Average to be effective. However, his ability to maintain this depends on the level of volume and the distance. The 'increase sound' stunt for this particular ability is called Brave Music of a Distant Drum.
  • It's Loud in Here: At a range of 30 yards Namir can increase the volume levels by up to 120 decibels, causing hearing damage after a short exposure. This extreme can lead to severe headaches and temporary loss of balance on his part, though this is assuming that he's pushing his limits. For anything closer than the 30 yard maximum, he need only roll Average to be effective. However, his ability to maintain this depends on the level of volume and the distance. The 'decrease sound' version of this stunt is called It's Quiet in Here. At its highest intensity, Namir is able to mute sounds as loud as a jet engine.
  • Mute Button: Namir can hone in on specific sounds and, without affecting the sounds around them, decrease their volume up to 120 decibels (which is enough to dampen the sound of a jet engine). This stunt is only effective within ten yards, provided there isn't an abundance of background noise. The more background noise there is, the shorter the range becomes. If there is a lot of background noise, Namir must roll Superb or higher in order for this stunt to be effective. Anything below Average, no matter the situation, is considered a failure. The 'increase sound' version of this stunt is called Hear a Pin Drop.
  • Ventriloquism For Dummies: Depending on the sound (provided it does not exceed his volume/distance limit), Namir can manipulate its intensity to make it appear as though the source is elsewhere. For example: he can shout something in one room and yet manipulate the sound in such a way as to make it appear that he is shouting from another room; or a car horn can honk on one end of the street and yet appear to be honking from another end of the street. This stunt is only applicable to one individual sound — multiple sounds are more difficult to "throw" — and can only be "thrown" within his volume/distance limit. The further away/louder the sound, the higher Namir must roll in order to achieve this stunt. Anything below Average or below, no matter the situation, is considered a failure.
  • Ears of a Fox: In addition to isolating sounds, Namir can manipulate them within a very controlled area, essentially creating a small bubble in which sound is altered. One application for this power is to increase the volume of sound just before it enters his ears, giving him an enhanced degree of hearing. Obviously this stunt applies only to sounds that travel far enough to reach his ears. This stunt is successful only with a roll of Average or higher. The 'decrease sound' version of this stunt is called Ears of a Fish.
  • Ringing in Your Ears: Similar to the Ears of a Fox stunt, this stunt is applicable to other people. If he so chooses, Namir can raise the volume around others' ears, enhancing their hearing — sometimes as a means of causing harm or immobilizing them. He can also decrease the volume around their ears, making them essentially deaf. This stunt applies only to a single individual and must roll Good or higher in order to succeed.
  • Clever Disguise: The most difficult stunt for Namir to achieve, as it does not fit within his usual manipulation of volume. With this stunt, Namir can alter the pitch of sounds, causing them to sound deeper or higher, depending on his intentions. A woman can be made to sound like a man and vice versa, or a simple chord in music can be turned into a light treble or floor-rattling bass. To achieve this stunt, Namir needs to roll a Great or higher.
  • Spousal Support: This stunt is to be rolled whenever Namir attempts to amplify or otherwise alter any of Samantha's stunts. He needs to roll a Great or higher in order to succeed; if he rolls a Good, he gets away with a mild headache; an Average or below incapacitates him for a time.

Quotes

  • "What is it?" "It is wrapping paper affixed around a cardboard box, which contains something for you. Honestly, Sam, haven't you ever gotten a present before?" —to Samantha upon giving her a stethoscope warmer.
  • "It's just general men-talk: women, boobs, comparing sizes." —to Samantha in reference to an Arabic conversation with William.

Trivia

Eggcream.jpg
  • Multi-Lingual: Namir reads, writes, and speaks fluent Arabic and Hebrew. When he takes notes in the pad he constantly carries around, they are written in Arabic.
  • Dyslexic: To all outward appearances, Namir can read just fine. It's when he's asked to or forced to read something aloud that his latent dyslexia truly manifests itself. As such, only his closest family members know about his problem, and he likes keeping it that way.
  • Favorite Color: Is silver, which is not something often known.
  • Does Not Like Dogs: Especially small ones. He once had a horrible encounter with a terrier owned by his mother when he was thirteen and still bears the scars — mental and physical.
  • Cream Soda: Namir has an inexplicable love for cream soda, specifically IBC, and his refrigerator is never without a sixpack. It is a mystery how he has managed to avoid developing kidney stones.
  • Rats: Namir loves rats and owns a pair of does: Dahlia (a black hooded), and Lamis (a Siamese).
  • XBox: Namir enjoys first-person shooters and owns an XBox 360. He plays games such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 3 online under the screenname nyninja1116.
  • LiveJournal: Namir has a rarely updated blog on LiveJournal under the name nyninja1116.
  • Egg Creams: Even though he doesn't actually like chocolate all that much, Namir has been addicted to egg creams ever since Samantha made him one after their third date. While they are not in danger of supplanting IBC cream soda as his favorite drink, he's never been able to refuse one.

Relationships

Family

  • Samantha Dayan (née Applebaum): Due to his occupation, it was inevitable that Namir would become acquainted with ER doctors. He managed to hit it off well with Samantha after he was taken to Mount Sinai's emergency room with a gunshot wound. The two became friends, which changed to something a little more a year later, when Namir asked her out on a date whilst laid up in bed after the mustard gas incident on the Long Island ferry. It was to Samantha that he went after he frightened Alyssa and Sean with a display of his powers, and it was then that they both discovered that the other was gifted. The two have since grown closer and don't seem to mind that Jews and Muslims are generally not meant to get along (though their families are another matter entirely). They moved in together late in July 2007, then became engaged in early September, despite religious differences, and married in February of 2008. They've since begun trying for a baby.
  • Cairo Dayan: Namir maintained an excellent relationship with his mother and called or visited her at least once every two weeks. She disapproved of his lax practices as a Muslim but was not very vocal about it and still supported him in many of his endeavors, including his marriage to Sam. As with many mothers who have sons in high-risk jobs, she worried quite a bit and expressed such to her eldest son, Fahd. Cairo died of a sudden stroke sometime in 2008.
  • Fahd Dayan: Fahd and Namir have a slightly strained relationship due to the fact that Namir was encouraged to continue his education while Fahd had to drop out of school to support the family after the death of Arif. Fahd later went on to get his GED and attended night courses in order to earn a degree. Fahd also disapproves of Namir's career choice and lack of faith and is far more vocal about it than his mother, though the two brothers have had no major quarrels on the subject. Namir has recently informed Fahd that the woman he's dating is Jewish, and it has caused no small amount of enmity in an already tense relationship.
  • Zaina Dayan: Namir gets along splendidly with his sister-in-law and is known to tease her incessantly about her love of dolphins, while she teases him about his fear of dogs. She makes incredible halva that Namir insists cannot be bested.
  • Essam Dayan: Essam is Namir's nephew, with whom Namir gets along well and often spoils rotten. Essam is into manga and anime, which is something Namir doesn't quite understand, but he indulges the boy's hobbies anyway. He also plays XBox with Essam whenever he has the chance.

Friends/Good

  • Alyssa Christianson: Namir met Alyssa by chance on the street and spoke to her at length about the mustard gas incident and the mechanics thereof, as she was curious to get some information for a book she was working on. The two ran into each other a few times after that and later found out that each had abilities during an incident in Starbucks (in which Namir frightened both her and Sean with a display of his powers). He has helped Alyssa come to grips with her gift on some level and considers her a good friend and person.
  • Bekah Morgan: Namir knows Bekah mostly as Samantha's friend, however he's started to get to know her a little better and counts her among his own friends. Bekah is the doctor who treated him when he was shot in the ribs during a botched robbery, and it was through this event that he figured out she had a gift. They get along well on a pseudo-sibling level, with plenty of good-natured ribbing about his relationship with Samantha. Bekah has been more than helpful in many ways and always seems to be a good source of support.
  • Erica Snow: During an attempt to fly covertly, Namir happened to catch Erica in an alley and, thinking she was up to no good, nearly arrested her. He found out her true motives for floating about in the dark wearing a ski mask and shared his own powers with her. The two maintain a loose friendship, as Erica volunteered to help Namir search for the man responsible for the mass suicide at Yankee Stadium. Though such attempts have remained unsuccessful, the two still keep in touch, including a rather embarrassingly failed attempt to set Erica up with William.
  • Felix Ivanov: Felix was Namir's first assigned partner in the NYPD. Though they aren't too close, they are still on friendly terms. Each knows about the other's abilities and that the other has been mysteriously snatched by people who implant isotopes.
  • Nima Jones: Namir and Nima play Halo 3 online together, often working on the same team (Karmageddon). He's met her face-to-face once, when she informed him that he looks like "that guy from The Mummy". He maintains that she is one of the best Halo players he's ever had the fortune of teaming with.
  • William Connors: William happened to overhear an Arabic conversation between Namir and Fahd and spoke to Namir in his native tongue. The two quickly discovered that they had a few things in common, such as a love of adrenaline and combat situations. They set up a laser-tag day in which Samantha managed to shoot Namir once, thus securing bragging rights for the rest of her life. Namir won the match and William insisted on another, which has yet to happen. Later, Namir attempted to set William up with Erica, only to discover that William is gay. It made Namir uncomfortable for a little while, but he's moved past it and still counts William as one of his friends, even if Samantha has adopted him as a Broadway buddy.

Other/Neutral

  • Meryl Wolfe: In point of fact, Namir doesn't really remember much about Meryl, however she was the woman who took him into Company custody. He vaguely remembers her face from that encounter but has not connected it with the face that he saw once earlier in a coffee shop. He thinks she's a little off her rocker but figures she is harmless, if not eccentric.

Enemies/Bad
