This petite, dark-haired Sicilian girl is the owner of Fiorella's Flowers, a small florist shop in the heart of New York. The shop, owned by her family for over twenty years, is reputed to have the most beautiful flowers in the entire city.
History
In the 1970s, Santo Fiorella and his brother Antonio owned a flower shop in Palermo, Sicily. On one otherwise unremarkable morning, a woman named Rosalia Peccoraro showed up to select flowers for her upcoming wedding. Santo was immediately stricken by her beauty, and he must have made quite an impression on Rosalia as well. When Rosalia discovered that she was pregnant, she knew that her intended husband was /not/ the father and the wedding was promptly broken off, much to the consternation of both families.
The lovers hastily decided to immigrate to the United States, where they were engulfed by the hustle and bustle of New York City. Adapting to life in the big city was a grueling struggle, but the difficulty they faced each day seemed to draw them closer together, rather than split them apart. What had begun as a mere fling had blossomed into much more by the time their daughter was born.
On August 10th, 1982, Adrienne Elena Fiorella emerged thrashing and wailing into the world. Money was tight — by that point, Santo was making working at the local produce market, but he was saving money as well, adding to the small savings he brought with him from Palermo. He intended to open his own flower shop, and by the time Adrienne was old enough to go to school, he managed to do just that.
Throughout most of her academic career, Adrienne was an average student. She did not truly shine until college, when she attained a degree in Art History from NYU. While Adrienne attended school, Santo worked hard to build his reputation. Business was not scarce, and he got along well with the neighboring residents — particularly the local Italians, although some of them were of questionable repute. Santo ran the shop with the help of his beloved wife, whom he called 'Rosina,' claiming that she was the most beautiful of all his roses.
When Adrienne finished college, she moved back in with her parents. While searching for a full-time job at one of the city's countless art galleries, she helped out at the flower shop in her spare time. Much to her surprise, she discovered that, not only did she /enjoy/ the work, but she seemed to have a certain knack for it as well. The flowers she wove into intricate arrangements always looked as though they had come alive under her gentle touch, often exhibiting an unmatched brilliance of color.
Recently, Santo has shown signs of a developing heart condition. The impulsive, often fiery-tempered Sicilian has suffered two minor heart attacks already, and that doubtless played a part in Adrienne's decision to take over Fiorella's Flowers. Because of the resemblance she bears to her mother, many of the shop's long-term customers still call her "Little 'Rella," but the nickname is an affectionate one. Adrienne has not coasted upon the reputation of her father, but instead, built upon it.
