Alexander Black is a freelance photographer in New York.
History
Alexander Black is from Hot Springs, NC, a touristy small town situated in the Appalachian Mountains. His family (Mom, Dad, older sister) operates a medium-sized tour package company that books cabins, outdoors activities and the like; because of this, Alex has been an outdoors guy all his life. Bow hunting, shooting, rafting, mountain climbing, eagle scout, you name it; much of his time as a boy and teen was spent helping guides and tourists with their gear for the business.
As he grew older, though, he became dissatisfied with mountain life. He got to go into Asheville and occassionally Atlanta on buying trips for the business; that, talking to the tourists, and what he'd see on TV or the movies really made him long for the big city. It didn't look like he'd ever get to go, though. The only college he could afford was a local community college, and the two-year Photographic Arts major he took wasn't likely to get him any jobs. That was, until he posted his nature and local photography work on several internet sites.
He had a natural eye for color and composition that came out in his digital work and he was soon in communication with four firms that wanted to hire him. He chose a firm that contracted out to various modeling agencies, since he wanted to expand his repetoire into the human form. That lasted a couple of years, until he made enough of a local rep for himself that he could go freelance and be his own boss. It's not easy and he's not as financially secure as he'd like to be, but he's able to afford a relatively nice place in Manhatten (thanks to saving the landlord's daughter's wedding) that he shares with a couple other people. He's done gallery work as well as commercial sales. Really, nothing is too big or too small for him to be involved in.
