At Least It's Not a Mountain Lion

On the Phone

PHONE: Your phone begins to ring. The Caller ID says 283-8008.

PHONE: You answer your phone, "Hello?"

PHONE: Lachlan's voice is plainly evident on the other end, sounding amazingly bright and alert for such an early time of day. Someone must have had lots of coffee. "Hey, Niki, s'Lachlan."

PHONE: Niki, in contrast, does not sound at all bright, alert, or caffeinated, and in fact sounds half asleep and ever-so-slightly perplexed. "Lachlan? Oh… hey."

PHONE: Lachlan is not perplexed, just uneasy. It's not like he talks to Niki on any sort of regular basis. "Hey." Derp, he already said that. "Uh, listen, ye've still got tha' dog I gave ye, righ'?" There's a point to this, it just takes him a while to get there.

PHONE: Niki isn't surprised at the question at all, but you'd never know it, by her voice. "Wh… yeah. Yeah, she's still here. This is, uhm…" Words, they're a challenge. "This is about Cam, right?"

PHONE: Lachlan, on the other hand, is a bit surprised at that one. "Uh. Yeah." Huh. Who knew that Cam and Niki communicate? "Did he tell ye 'bout wha' I was thinkin'? 'Bout trainin' yer dog ta be a watchdog fer 'im?"

PHONE: Niki says, "Not in so many words, but he said something about a watchdog."

PHONE: Lachlan pauses a moment, trying to figure out what to say next. He did sorta just lay it out on the table there. "So, uh. Yeah. Tha's … wha' I was callin' ye 'bout. Seein' if ye'd mind." Wow, that was kinda lame.

PHONE: Niki answers, "Sure. I mean. I guess." She doesn't entirely seem in a sharp state of mind, so Lachlan could have said 'I'm giving Cam a mountain lion, okay?' and she may have said 'mmkay make sure it's house-trained'. What she says after a moment's pause is, "She'll still be safe, right— to be around the kids."

PHONE: Lachlan is quick to assure, "Oh yeah, yeah, s'no' gonna make 'er mean 'r anythin'. She'll just be like a seein'-eye dog tha's trained ta keep an eye out fer threatenin' people an' give Cam a heads-up so he can get outta there. Only time she'd ever attack anyone is if she an' Cam got cornered somewhere. S'safe." And not a mountain lion, though given a couple more years, he could arrange for that too.

PHONE: Niki answers with sincerity, this time, "That… sounds great, Lachlan. It makes me nervous that he's out there alone sometimes."

PHONE: Lachlan sounds even more chipper now! "Well yeah, yeah, 'specially with wha's been happenin'. So tha's great, then. 'll stop by later on inna week an' start givin' 'er an' Cam some lessons. Shouldna take 'er more'n a week 'r two ta learn." Not with the way he trains them.

PHONE: Niki says, "The sooner the better, then."

PHONE: Lachlan says, "'Ve got t'morrow 'r, uh— " There's the sounds of papers being hurriedly shuffled about, some things falling, scrabbling about "— Wednesday free. 'll give ye a call an' let ye know.""

PHONE: Niki's answer is a simple, "Sure."

PHONE: Lachlan's is too: "A'righ' then. Take care o' yerself." And then the line goes dead.

PHONE: The phone call has been ended by the other person.
