In 2003, there wasn't a single teenage girl who didn't have a pinup poster of 14-year old Austin Wellingham on their wall. The former child star vanished, but is now attempting a comeback on NOW Network's Nightlife.
Austin Wellingham was born on June 8, 1989. His father Bruce was an Air Force pilot, and his mother Julie was a concert violinist for the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. During the Gulf War in 1991, Bruce was shot down and killed in Kuwait. Less than six months later, Julie accidentally overdosed on the anti-depressants she had been on since his death, and the two-year old Austin went to Bruce’s brother, Chris.
Bruce was single, and not the best of guys. He raised Austin, but more often than not, that meant exploiting the kid for his own gain. By the age of six, Austin had been in nearly a hundred television commercials and twelve professional stage plays. At 10, Austin was cast in the role of Tyler on the Disney Channel’s hit, No Class, a popular adolescent comedy show about a set of twin girls navigating public school after a childhood of homeschooling. It was the show’s second season, and Tyler was the shy, quiet, guitar-playing classmate that one of the twins would spend the next four season’s pining over.
Austin’s career should have exploded. He was on the cover of every young teen girl magazine and pinup posters of him were on the walls of girls’ rooms everywhere. When No Class was cancelled and regulated to reruns, the 14-year old Austin had trouble finding his next job. The trades credited the difficulties of child actors making the transition to adulthood for his disappearance from the industry. After a few small commercials and one guest spot on a major network procedural crime drama, Austin fell back into obscurity.
Austin turned 18, he began to play music at local coffee shops in LA, trying to garner attention. While he earned some local flare with his piercing, perfect pitch and haunting electric sound, he couldn't get an acting gig to save his life.
The first time Austin would make the news since his child actor days was in 2008, when Austin found his manager/agent and uncle Chris dead in their jacuzzi. Chris had accidentally knocked his radio into the bathtub while he soaked and was electrocuted. It wasn't good press, but when you're a desperate actor, the only bad press is no press.
After a year of venting his emotions in the local music clubs, Austin finally attained a new agent, and has just been cast to join the new season of Nightlife on the NOW network. There’s not much fanfare to his joining the show, as most don’t recognize him as the kid from No Class all grown up. But the producers of the show hope that as the show progresses, and people realize it’s him, it will prove to be a curiosity amongst teenagers and new viewers will tune in to see just what happened to that little boy.
