"Becoming a Queen"

Cyberland

"We're leaving together… But still it's farewell!
And maybe we'll come back To earth… who can tell?"

Singing along with the familiar Europe song and dressed in a white t-shirt and plaid pyjama bottoms, Gene appears to working on installing… something into one of the corners of his 'temporary' dwelling place, putting some wiring here and there. Unlike most people, Gene really doesn't have a conventional phone. Unlike most people though, he is almost always online, even using the same laptop that he tried to hack into Pinehearst.

Across the Atlantic, Micah lays on his bed, trying to come to a decision. But not all decisions are easy. Even after weighing all of the options Micah is beyond unsure, but then are fourteen year olds even supposed to think about such things. He can't talk to Cam, Molly, or Charlotte about it; he thinks he knows what they'd say. And so he thinks. And as he thinks, he searches online. And then he finds something, or rather someone that catches his attention.

Gene's computer is familiar. Very familiar. With a smirk, Micah opens a text document on the computer:

Rebel: HAVE WE MET?

The 'incoming message' beep of Gene's computer causes him to lift up his head, hrmming to himself. "What the heck?" he inquires as he moves toward the laptop on the ground. "Computer, stop audio."

"Message recieved" comes from the speakers around the room, allowing silence to reign as Gene takes the laptop into his hands. Taking a moment to get into his 'BIG BAD' role, he cracks his knuckles and begins to type.

Prometheus: …I was wondering if you were going to contact me directly. I take it you found out my ally Roberta was sleeping?

The response causes Micah to nod a bit, even if Gene can't see him do it. He hmmms to himself before he considers what the write. Prometheus didn't answer the question, but then it's Prometheus so at the very least they're familiar.

Rebel: I DO KNOW YOU. FROM PINEHEARST, RIGHT?

He takes another moment to consider everything going on before he admits,

Rebel: I'M THE ONE THEY CALL REBEL.

Prometheus: You are correct. I am the activist hacker known as Prometheus. I know who you are. You shouldn't be getting involved with this. I was able to see the list and didn't see your parents in there… It's a miracle they haven't been chased like

The message is sent as Gene thinks to himself. Gene is a smart man, so leaps in logic are made. If Niki is not on the list and Micah is, something is wrong. If they knew about Micah, the chances that one of Micah's parents would be on it would high indeed. The fact that they aren't is troubling. If Micah could get and alter the list, then his name wouldn't be on there. Therefore, that leaves a few options, all of them unpleasant.

Prometheus: What happened to your parents?

Blinking, Micah frowns. In the moment he begins to snap his laptop shut, but with a sigh, he decides to stay online. Swallowing, his bites his lip. What to say? How much detail to incorporate.

Rebel: DEAD. BOTH DEAD.

He sniffs as he shifts on the bed and glances at the door. He doesn't feel like crying again today. Which is the reason he doesn't talk about them often.

Rebel: BUT IT'S FINE. I CAN LOOK OUT FOR MYSELF.

Not that he has to. He has the Germany crowd: Charlotte, Cam, Molly.

Rebel: I'M JUST TRYING TO DO WHAT THEY WOULD TO HELP PEOPLE.

Gene really doesn't have it in himself to tell the young child how much of a jerk his mother could be. He doesn't ask about the parents further, figuring that it is something that he or someone else can research for him. If they died suddenly, the young man wants to know how and why because it doesn't seem natural, that's for sure.

Prometheus: I understand your desire to help others. I am trying to fight the 'good' fight as well, but it is getting to be a complicated matter. With Ivory quitting, it leaves a void in the chain of command for the Alpha Protocol… And it is possible that someone less merciful will take the position.

Rebel: IVORY IS ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS. HE GOT CAM AND I RELEASED FROM THE AP HUMAN RESOURCES ROOM. YOU DON'T WANT TO GO IN THERE. YOU GET A TUBE IN YOUR NOSE AND IV IN YOUR ARM… I'M SAD HE QUIT.

Even with what Lena told him, Micah still can't think of Ivory as totally bad. At least he fought for him and Cam. There's a significant pause before Micah continues to type. Somehow asking a stranger seems better than asking Charlotte, Cam, or Molly.

Rebel: I HAVE A HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION… IF YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE, BUT IT MEANT SACRIFICING YOURSELF, WOULD YOU DO IT?

Prometheus: Ivory was a politician. While he did some things that disagree with, he was definately the lesser of two evils.

While Gene had, and still has, major issues with Ivory, Wynn was not the villain that he had planned on (and in some darker part of Gene… hoped for). The second comment from Rebel causes Gene to quirk a brow. The perk of online land is that it is even easier to be blunt.

Prometheus: The question isn't hypothetical, is it?

Micah sighs at the comment as his lips twitch. So easy to see through text. The subtext is simple. His eyes narrow as he presses his lips together.

Rebel: NO. ARE THERE ANY REAL HYPOTHETICAL QUESTIONS?

And there it is, the truth.

Rebel: BUT THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A HERO, RIGHT? SELF-SACRIFICE FOR THE GREATER GOOD? EVERY HERO DOES THAT. THEY LIVE THAT WAY. I NEED TO DO WHATEVER I CAN TO HELP.

Oddly enough, Gene decides to choose one question and not another.

Prometheus: Of course there are. If you were able to have the ability to control frogs, but every time you did, you had to give a really gassy fart, would you want it?

The frown is replaced by a lopsided smirk and quiet chuckle at the text. He glances at the ceiling as he considers the question.

Rebel: WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO BE SPECIAL? EVEN IF IT COMES WITH ITS PROBLEMS? LIKE THE ONE I'M IN NOW. YEAH, MAYBE I'D ALMOST NEVER USE THE ABILITY, BUT IF I WAS BORN WITH IT, IT'D BE PART OF WHO I AM.

Yes, Micah likes having an ability. He likes being him. He likes living the way he lives.

Gene gives a small smile, content with the response that he gets.

Prometheus: There you go, hypothetical situation. Something that wouldn't likely happen, but shows who you are in the answer that you give.

Prometheus: Now to answer your question, it depends. I admit I've done a little self-sacrifice in my day, but the question is always is what is sacrificed worth what is saved? If you are talking about a deal with the government, I wouldn't be too quick to accept. While Wynn was a man of his word, there is nothing stopping any of them from lying to get what they want. Even Wynn spied on people all the time to get the upper hand.

Micah shrugs at the response and hmms to himself as he raises a hand to his forehead. Pursing his lips together a very small sigh escapes his lips.

Rebel: BUT THERE'S A CHANCE. AND IT'S RELATIVELY LOW RISK TO ME. I ALREADY KNOW THE WORST OF IT. AND I HAVE FEW TIES. I DON'T HAVE PARENTS. I HAVEN'T HEARD FROM MY COUSIN. I HAVE CAM, AND I NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR HIM. BUT THIS IS RELATIVELY LOW RISK.

And then there's Molly and Charlotte. Micah closes his eyes gently as he sighs again.

The young genius frowns as he sees that this conversation is not sounding very heroic. It is time to move things up a notch. Moving to get the bike helmet that he wears with his usual get up, Gene types furious as he 'gets into character'.

Prometheus: A small chance. They could kill you, lock you away… Unnecessary risk. This war, this secret war between the government and the Evolved, will continue regardless of what deal you make. Your sacrifice will, at best, only buy time for those that you care for. If you wish to look out for Cam, the best thing for you to do is lay low. Ties to the present are nothing when you have important to the future. The pawn start off weak in a chess game, but if you can get them to the other side of the board, they change everything. While you are a pawn now, I have pleged long ago to ensure you become the … um, queen you were meant to be. Okay, you get what I mean by that. I know you're not a girl.

Micah frowns further as his eyes open to the message. He stares at it several moments before considering each of the words, and letting them weigh heavily in his mind.

Rebel: MAYBE.

He doesn't exactly know what he thinks about being called a pawn either. It's not like he's been useless in all of this.

Rebel: BUT THEY WOULDN'T LIE, WOULD THEY? THEY WANT MY SURRENDER. AND THEY'RE CONSIDERING NOT GOING AFTER EVERYONE. JUST THE DANGEROUS PEOPLE.

The response is swift.

Prometheus: What motivation would they have for NOT lying?

The frown is now pasted to Micah's lips. This conversation is far from happy. He's not content with any of it.

Rebel: I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK OF IT ALL. BUT IF THEY STOP, IT'D BE WORTH IT. I JUST WANT EVERYONE SAFE.

Prometheus: That won't happen until they have decided that hunting the Evolved is not going to work. By letting them bully you, it gives them validity. If you are in their care, they might use you as a bargining chip for people like myself. Hopefully, they will not resort to using those that they have captured as hostages anytime soon or the situation will become ugly fast.

Rebel: ARE YOU SURE? THIS ISN'T BECAUSE I'M THIRTEEN IS IT? — I'LL BE FOURTEEN NEXT WEEK. I DON'T THINK THEY COULD USE ME TO LEVERAGE ANYONE. LIKE I SAID, MONICA IS MISSING. MOM AND DAD ARE DEAD.

Except Cam or Charlotte maybe. He sighs again. None of this is simple. None of this is straightforward.

Rebel: AND I'VE CAUSED TROUBLE TO THOSE I'M WITH. SOMETIMES I THINK IT'D BE BETTER FOR THEM IF I WASN'T HERE. I WAS HELPFUL WITH THE TRAINS AND NOW I JUST SEEM TO BE IN TROUBLE ALL OF THE TIME… GETTING CAUGHT… MAKING THE VIDEO…

Prometheus: As I said, you could be used as leverage for me. I admit I do not want to see you harmed due to my actions. That is the trouble that comes with making grand alliances. Over time, everyone becomes connected in a web and if one person falls, it threatens to make a chain reaction. You are young, still learning the ways of the hero. In time, you will become something grand, I am almost sure of it. While I figure the day won't come for awhile, when I go, someone must be ready to fill the void and I am unsure that my friends alone will be able to fill it.

Prometheus: In any case, you have asked for my advice on the matter… And there you have it.

Rebel: WELL THANKS FOR THE ADVICE.

Micah's still unsure what to do. After all he doesn't actually know Prometheus, right? But Pinehearst… Frown. Sigh. He could really use his mom or dad right about now.

Rebel: THEY TAKE EVERYTHING FROM US BUT OUR HOPE. OUR LIVES, OUR FAMILIES. I REFUSE TO LET THEM STEAL MY HOPE FROM ME. AND MAYBE I'M NAIVE, BUT I THINK THIS CAN ALL BE SOLVED WITH RELATIVE PEACE SOMEHOW.

And even then hope is hard to cling to when so much is going on.

Prometheus: I believe this as well. Open conflict would tear this nation, and possibly the world apart. The proper thing to do would be to figure out how this started, who is behind it and stop them. There is a reason why the Evolved hunt has happened. Once we find the cause, I am sure that the solution will present itself. Until then, we will do our best and live up the heroes of lore. If you need my ear or my services as a warrior or an informant, be sure to let me know.

That said, Gene takes off the black helmet, figuring he is getting to the end of his grand speeches…. That and it's hard to see what you are typing while wearing one of those things.

Micah hmmms. Content that he's not alone in his hopeful intentions. Finally, he types one last thing.

Rebel: ALRIGHT. YOU CAN REACH ME IF YOU NEED THROUGH MOC.LIAMG|DATREBIL.LEBER#MOC.LIAMG|DATREBIL.LEBER. IT'S UNTRACEABLE TO ANYONE BUT ME. THANKS FOR THE CHAT. REBEL, OUT.

That said, Micah snaps the laptop shut and stows it underneath the bed. Standing to his feet, he pads to the door. Must make a decision soon.
