History

Celeste Boudreaux was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a single mother. The family was poor, and when ends did not meet in one place, they had to move to another. Throughout her earlier years, she was an outspoken atheist. Between moving and fights with her mother, what she describes as "a war zone going on at home", she began dabbling in drugs. She started to do drugs at the age of 15.

The fighting became so intense that she was forced to move in with her aunt and uncle in Hell, Michigan. After leaving her family and leaving drugs, Celeste experienced what she described as a "nervous breakdown," cutting off her hair and beginning to consider suicide. When the nervous breakdown occurred she started remembering everything that had happened between her mom and her, and also things that happened before they started fighting all the time. This didn't help her to get any better.

She would have flashbacks of just random memories that had happened to her when she was younger. She wasn't sure of how to control these flashbacks, and it made her worse. Every time she would try to focus on something other than her past, she would have a flashback strong enough that made her feel like she was reliving them.

Her aunt and uncle helped her through by putting her in a rehab center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When she got out, she was still having small problems, and started to go to church with her aunt and uncle. She became a Christian, and started moving in the right direction. When the nervous breakdown occurred she started remembering everything that had happened between her mom and her, and also things that happened before they started fighting all the time. This didn't help her to get any better.

In rehab, they showed her how to deal with her anger by drawing. So she started to draw and decided to go to college to become a tattoo artist. This helped her with her ability to remember things. She would study a picture for a little while before starting to actually draw the picture, and then she would draw the picture perfectly without even looking at the picture again. When she was done she decided to move out to New York City, New York to pursue her career as a tattoo artist. She made a few friends at the local club, and they decided to make a band, Negative Zero. Celeste became the vocalist for the band, and they play at a few clubs in the city, and also play at local shows.

Once she got enough money she got an apprenticeship with a local tattoo artist, Kevin Ervin from the Fuji tattoo parlor, doing some drawings for him, and also doing a few tattoos here and there. When she started getting good, he started to let her doing more and more tattoos.

After she was finished with her apprenticeship, she quit the shop to focus on the band, but she continues to look for another shop to work in to help pay bills. She plays at clubs mostly, trying to get her name out there. She also draws in her spare time, to keep her skill up. She keeps them all put away in her own portfolio so she can show another tattoo artist that she thinks is good enough to see them.

She started talking to her mom again when she moved back to New York. They became best friends after they started talking again. They don't talk as much as they used to, but when they do they talk for hours upon end. Her aunt and uncle still keep in touch, and still think of her as their own daughter. She currently tries to focus on controlling her ability to remember her past, but she still has flashbacks every now and then. But she continues to work on keeping them under control.

Quotes

  • "My band and I share the same faith. So when we deal with the whole 'Christian band thing', we kind of think about something POD says, like, 'If you're a Christian, it affects everything in your life. So if you're a plumber, does that make you a Christian plumber?' I don't know the answer. We're a band, it's part of who we are, so it comes out in our music, and it's the fuel for what we do. And finding faith saved my life. So I'm not ashamed of it at all."
