History
Charla Ann Keble, daughter of furniture store co-owners Wilson and Josephine (or "Will and Jo") Keble, is dead. But someone now wears her name and face… The story begins with one Emmitt Galloway, a young man with a tough life. He grew up in an Ohio suburb, a rather conservative area, and had the unfortunate fate of being bisexual in that situation, which his parents did not approve of. It was something that he discovered about himself early in life- and he didn't understand what was wrong. He grew up being criticized and put down for something he couldn't change, which led to him growing up despising his current life and wanting to escape from it. He fell in with a group of thugs who, while maybe not completely accept him, gave him a place he felt he could belong. This continued through his teenage years as his life continued its downward slide into drugs and violence. He had to keep all this from his parents of course, which contributed to his splitting away from them.
It seemed like there wasn't any way things could get any worse for him… until one day one of his gangmates showed him something: the dead body of a young woman he recognized from TV commercials. It was Charla Ann Keble, and his "friend" had just killed her. Hearing the story from the source and seeing the body understandably shocked him, making him reflect on his life. He had to get away from all this, and start anew, but how? He decided he had to tell the police, even though he'd be in danger from his "friends" if he did. He couldn't get any sleep the next night… as he washed his face, something very strange happened. He couldn't get the image of Charla's body out of his head… and eventually he saw her face in the mirror. Somehow, he'd transformed into Charla. Before he could even scream he'd returned to his normal self, but he experimented with this strange ability all night. It wasn't a dream- he really could change his shape and become any kind of human being he could think of. With that, he came up with a plan- to leave his old life behind and atone for his life's mistakes. To that end, he began to research Charla's life- telling anyone who asked that he was interested in helping solve the mystery of her "disappearance". He found out all he could, while persuading the killer to keep her body in place. Once he'd learned every detail he could find, he went to the burial site dressed in an outfit identical to the one Charla was wearing, burned the body thoroughly, and then became Charla, most wounds included. The new Charla stumbled out of the woods, where "she" was found by a passerby.
At the trial, the killer was dumbfounded that Charla had apparently survived, even though they'd verified that she was dead. He had no way to explain it, but everything seemed to verify that it was her- though she claimed to have forgotten large patches of her life in the attack, Charla was able to give most of the details and did clearly "remember" her attack- from the story the killer gave to Emmitt, of course. There was no plausible explanation for why Charla didn't say dead- her killer was sent to prison for "attempted" murder after all was said and done. An outcome that, while it made the new Charla a bit sad, at least satisfied (from a certain point of view) Emmitt's promise not to tell anyone about Charla's killing. That trial was seven years ago- the Kebles have now moved to New York.
Now, the once Emmitt, now Charla, has settled into his/her new role. Though it did take some time to adjust to the many changes involved, she now thinks of herself more as Charla than Emmitt. While the Kebles have noticed that their daughter is acting differently than she once did, they believe it to be the result of her brush with death, rather than a combination of a poor life beforehand, witnessing the aftermath of a murder, and the constant fear of discovery as a shapeshifter and a fake. With the help of extensive counseling and tutoring, Emmitt-as-Charla even made it through college, something which Emmitt never dreamed of doing, and is now even appearing again in Will and Jo's Furniture ads. Having to keep up so many masks makes things stressful, but Charla manages to keep up a smile by thinking of how much better things are now than they were then. As for Emmitt… nobody seems to miss him now that he's gone.
As for future plans… Emmitt decided while researching Charla that when he became her, he would return to her childhood dream of becoming a news anchorwoman, which the new Charla has faithfully worked towards. Thanks in part to her inspiring backstory, Charla obtained a job at a local TV station, particularly dealing with entertainment news. Now, Charla Ann Keble, the former Emmitt Galloway, would like nothing more than to live a peaceful life from now on, with no reminders of her previous self, and certainly no reminders of her special ability…
