David Berman is a mild-mannered paper salesman and former political activist who discovers the ability to control people with his words.
History
David Berman spent most of his twenties in Africa, working as a member of the Peace Corps; in Tanzania, he met his (now ex) wife. When he returned to the United States in the late eighties he dedicated his time to being active in political demonstrations and author until his divorce, after which he rapidly settled down and withdrew from public life.
Since he stopped writing and settled down, David remarried, redivorced, and has spent the last ten years growing increasingly boring and focused on advancing his career as a white-collar office worker. He kept writing, but has apparently failed to get a sentence published in over seven years.
One day he asked an irritating co-worker to throw himself off the roof, and he immediately did so.
Things have gotten very strange for David.
Timeline
- March 5th, 2008 — David's catastrophic first power application takes place. He is, of course, not implicated at all in his co-worker's sudden suicide.
Quotes

- "I can't talk to you. I'm sorry. Just—I can't. Please."

- He does not tell anyone about his past, and most of his friends and colleagues only know of David as a middle-aged, middle-class failure sort of office drone.
- David is on The List.
