Deathly Sorrows

New York City

It’s a bright and sunny day on the street of New York. Birds chirp.. a woman is jogging down the street. All seems peaceful as it usually does in the neighborhood.

That is.. until people start to see and then smell the smoke. There is something burning, the woman jogging stops as she sniffs the air and rushes towards where the fire is raging. Which can now be seen thanks to her being so close, it’s then that the woman decides to do the best thing she can.

That’s scream.

Everyone knows the manor which is on fire now, it’s Hanner Manor home to the illustrious and beautiful Malori and her husband Luke. The couple threw parties at least twice a month and everyone knew that this was the place to be on a Saturday night, if they wanted to have fun that is.

In an all to twist of irony and bad timing. Kitty has just turned onto the street on which she grew up with all the manors and big houses on the street. She drums her fingers on the steering wheel. Humming to the music that is blaring out of her speakers.

She then notices the smoke rising and since her house is on the end of the street.. and that’s where the smoke is..

“Holy shit.” She breathes out in shock. A moment of hesitation passes before the young woman floors her car the last few yards to her parent’s home before she swerves to a stop right in front of the jogging woman.

“Call 911!” she yells at the woman as she pumps her arms and moves fast pass the woman towards the burning house. The smoke is thick and Kitty waves her hand in front of her face and pulls the hood of her jacket up over her head.

She reaches the side door, a small door that leads to the kitchen. Kitty takes her hands and covers them with her sleeves so that she turns the knob and enters the house.

The fire hasn’t yet reached the kitchen but the smoke sure has. Miss Hanner coughs and shuts her watery eyes before she kicks through the swinging door to the dining room.

What she finds there makes her heart drop.. along with making her drop to her knees.

Slumped over the head chair with a knife in his back is her stepfather Luke Sanchez. Blood drips down the man’s back and his black hair is messy and matted with blood. His dark brown eye now lifeless.

Kitty screams as she sees her father murdered. She shakes her head over and over again, tears spilling down her face. The fire has now spread and is creeping up Luke’s body as Kitty mouths something, “Love you..” before she moves on to the door where she is stop dead in her tracks.

Malori Hanner is stuck to the wall of the hallway, her body charred and burned. It’s as if her body was melted to the wall. Kitty sags against the wall and breathes in shakily. Her eyes are bloodshot and she sinks to the floor.

“No.. no..” she whispers to herself, but now perfectly content to just sit and watch her mother as the fire creeps up on Kitty as well.

Just as Kitty is about to be burned a loud crash can be heard and a large man in firefighter gear bursts through the door. “Come on!” he yells and pulls her arm, when she doesn’t move. He picks her up and hustles her quickly out of the building.

“Bring a stretcher!” he yells as Kitty is brought out to the morning sun and-

The vision stops playing and Kitty’s eyes return from the milk white color to the light brown color they usually are.

She screams over and over and the nurses come in to hold her down as her tears run down her face and she drops the object she was holding onto, a picture they had saved from the fire, of her mother, father and herself as a child.

“Give her a sedative.” A woman in a white coat says as she enters, her light blonde hair wrapped into a tight bun and her cool blue eyes looking over Kitty.

“It came to late..” Kitty murmurs as she slips off to the world of unconscious.

“Why did it come to late..” she asks before her head lolls and her eyes close.

“She keeps having the nightmares, every hour now.” The nurse says, ignorant of the fact that Kitty isn’t having nightmares, she’s reliving the vision over and over whenever she touches the photo.

“Dr. Hamin is going to be coming to speak to her tomorrow, to try and help her. We can’t keep her in this room forever. She’ll snap out of her grief..” the doctor says as she exits the room.

“She has to..” she says quietly as the nurse shuts the door on the slumbering Kitty.
