Date It Happened: July 14th, 2007

Forgotten Phonecall

PHONE: Your phone begins to ring. The Caller ID says 283-3194.

PHONE: You answer your phone, "Peter Petrelli."

PHONE: Niki is on the other line, and slowly, she says, "Hey… Peter. It's Niki."

PHONE: Peter had already answered the phone with his name, rather professionally. "Niki?" There's a hint of a wordless sound, as if he suddenly remembered something. There's even a hint of a grimace in his voice. "I'm sorry, I meant to call you after I talked to Cass about— a lot of things happened. Are you okay?"

PHONE: Niki hesitates for just a second, as if she was ever-so-slightly thrown off by all of that. "I'm fine, are— are you okay?" The fact that they have to ask that which such weight behind it every time they meet speaks volumes about their lives.

PHONE: Peter can't help but laugh as she turns the question around on him. Yes, the weight certainly says many things about their various lifestyles. "Yeah— I'm okay enough. Getting better now that things have slowed down." Still, there's a grimace remaining in his voice. "I talked to Cass the night after we talked, I just… forgot to call you. Things got pretty busy… But it's take care of now, more or less." He'd just completely forgotten to check up with Cass on if they could start on it.

PHONE: Niki says, "Don't worry about it. I was… taking care of something myself." Pause. "The pills— the ones I was taking. Before… to help. Well, I have some more."

PHONE: Peter sounds surprised, "How'd you get your— " But his voice suddenly stops. There's only a few ways to get hands on pills like that. As far as he knows only one place even has them. A pause follows, then, "I thought you didn't want to rely on them?"

PHONE: Niki answers firmly, "I don't. … I didn't. It's— I found a way around it. I just thought… I dunno, as a last resort, if I just had them." She's dismal more than she is hopeful on that possibility, but then her tone takes a turn for the better. "And— maybe, if you and Cass want to study what's in them…"

PHONE: Peter sits in silence at the other side of the line. Silence that doesn't last, but it certainly lingered longer than normal. "It's weird… we really have a lot in common." There's that hint of a laugh again, just a hint, more an exhale through his nose that might sound amused. "I did the same thing— got my hands on a couple doses of what they gave me at the Company. For testing and emergency both. It'll be good to have a back up, in case mind reading doesn't do much. Hopefully it'll be a last resort we don't need, though."

PHONE: Niki can't help but laugh under her breath a bit, too. "I only have a bit. Probably not even enough to really work. I can… get more, if I have to."

PHONE: Peter says, "Let's see if we need to go to that first. Never know… it might actually work." There's another pause, and it's almost as if he's checking his watch. "Will you be free in a few days? I can talk to Cass tomorrow at work, see if she's ready for it, but I— have plans in the evening…""

PHONE: Niki says, "Sure," agreeably, more casual that the plans they're talking about really should be… but it's better not to think about it too hard. Nonetheless, there's a tenseness to her voice when she speaks up again. "I don't know if… anything Cass has'll be strong enough. If something goes wrong. Make sure it's safe. In case."

PHONE: Peter has a knowing voice from the sound of things, "I know— need to be really careful. Especially since I'm sure Cass will insist on being in the room." No matter what he might wish. At least he can survive just about anything that her alter-ego would do to him. "If it makes you feel any safer… I found out I can flip a car over with my mind— If I have to I can probably hold you back."

PHONE: Niki says, "You can— " There's not much you can say to that. 'Wow'? "Wow." Yeah. That sums it up. "I can see how that could be kinda helpful."

PHONE: Peter sounds a little sheepish even if he's the one who brought it up, "Yeah— helpful." A breath later. "We can probably get together in… a couple nights. I'll give you a call once I know which one Cass'd prefer— I don't know if you have a new job yet, but you might need to find a babysitter…" Children are one of those things people have to take to mind.

PHONE: Niki says, "…I work at home. I can find someone to take care of Micah." The woman pauses, but it's obvious enough that she's about to say something; it's as if her breath catches and holds. "What if…"

PHONE: Peter pauses. There's many What ifs that could appear right now, but he can make a few guesses. "I can't promise nothing will go wrong," he says. Still, there's a continuation, far more sincere, "But— I'll do everything that I can to make sure you — Niki — go home to your son when we're finished. Okay?"

PHONE: Niki has her doubts. Big, glaring, dangerous doubts. But the fact is, Peter got her 'what if' right on the mark. "I guess that's… all I can ask for."

PHONE: Peter guessed well because… that's what he would be worried about too. If he had someone at home relying on him. And they have a lot in common. "I just wish I could give you more of a promise…" He's not a politican. He won't make a promise to do anything beyond try… "I'll call you after I talk to Cass this time." Hopefully no serial killers will kidnap his friend and blow stuff up this time?

PHONE: Niki says, "It's either a promise or…" She trails off. "I'll talk to you soon." Hopefully nothing goes terribly wrong while they're waiting."

PHONE: Peter says, "Yeah— I'll call tomorrow after I leave work, at the latest."

PHONE: Peter seems to linger a moment, before he adds the, "Night," and finally hangs up.

PHONE: You end your current call.
