Summary:

Medusa and Rebel meet over cyberspace. Distrust abounds.

"Medusa Meet Rebel"

Cyberland

In the quiet of a generic sitting room, Micah blinks through the emails he'd been tracking — his laptop is open to the communication between Mark Scotts and some woman named Medusa. While the emails have been unusually cryptic, he thinks he may be onto something again. He's more hesitant than he used to be, but there is a sort of urgency. Biting his bottom lip, he logs into gmail, and sends an email of his own. All Caps. Blunt.

« MOC.LIAMG|LEBER.DATREBIL#MOC.LIAMG|LEBER.DATREBIL Writes: MEDUSA. WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR PEOPLE? ARE YOU ONE OF THEM? »

Bold question considering she'd likely answer no either way. Still, it's worth writing.

It's quite a few days later when Cody checks her email. She's got Mark's phone number now, so she doesn't actually need to check but for some reason she's got an OCD tendancy to check all the emails that offer natural male enhancement. She finds them funny.

When she hits the libertad email, she purses her lips in consideration for a moment. No, she's not going to answer it. It could be a trap. Rather, she waits another day or so and calls Mark, only to receive his voicemail, she hangs up without leaving a message. It bothers her, so she quickly sends off a text.

«Changing email, someone else got medusa. Will contact you as soon as I can. Could be trouble.»

After the text message is sent, Cody goes back into the email account and deletes it. She could have (maybe should have) answered but after Erin's attack, she's not about to stick her neck out again.

The text is intercepted by Micah — he's been watching for signs of Medusa. His lips flicker into a sort of smug smile at the text — he now has a phone he can contact her at — and then responds in kind — utilizing his gift to send a text of his own:

« REBEL: MEDUSA.»

It's an odd start to a conversation. In a way he's making sure she knows he can't easily be ignored. Not easily.

« REBEL: WHY DID YOU ASK FOR A LIST OF PEOPLE WITH ABILITIES? I READ YOUR EMAILS. »

From her place in the internet cafe, Cody looks around. It takes everything she has not to throw the phone in the garbage and just walk away. It probably would have been the smart thing to do, but the agent has always jumped headfirst into trouble. This is just another version.

«who are you?»

She's not about to answer any questions, this Rebel is giving her just enough rope to hang herself with. She can't contact Pyle, if he's reading her emails and knows her phone number, she'd be better off using conventional mail to arrange an extraction.

Blinking, Micah is caught a bit off-guard, but he shakes his head, he refuses to answer directly until he has at least one of his questions answered, but he writes anyways:

« REBEL: I AM REBEL. AND I WON'T LET THEM TAKE MORE OF US. IT HAS TO STOP. SO ARE YOU WORKING WITH THEM? »

He's being to-the-point. He is Rebel, it's not a lie, but there's more to who he is.

«yes»

It's a one word reply, it's a partial truth and it's all he's going to get. Cody's just not in a very generous mood. Then working on a hunch, she pecks at the keys to her phone for a few minutes, tapping out a very slow addendum.

«theres nothing you can do to stop it. when they find you they will catch you. all you can do is hide and wait. maybe pray.»

It's what she's doing after all, hiding in the last possible place they would look for her. At least it's her hope, there have been rumors that the evolved of Alpha Protocol were going to be terminated. With termination it can only be assumed that she would gain a new necklace.

Micah openly scowls and then frowns.

« REBEL: WHY? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING? »

It's an honest enough question. His nose wrinkles at the notion of them catching them again. And he couldn't just hide and disappear again if he wanted to. He's stuck in a way. If he's ever going to get justice for his parents he needs to continue; hiding isn't an option. It's not about hope anymore; it's about justice.

« REBEL: I'M AN ENIGMA. THEY CAUGHT ME ONCE AND I GOT AWAY. THEY TRIED AGAIN AND I ESCAPED ONCE MORE. HIDING ISN'T AN OPTION. THEY'VE TAKEN EVERYTHING FROM ME AND I CAN'T JUST DISAPPEAR. YOU SEE, I'VE GOT NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE. »

And he doesn't, not anymore. He doesn't even have hope to cling to. All he has is his Rebellion. They took his parents, they took his freedom (for awhile), and now they've taken his hope. All he wants now is justice and maybe, just maybe he'll gain some of himself back.

An escapee, that means there's a record of him or her somewhere. Pulling her notebook out of her pocket, Cody flips to one of the last pages and starts jotting down all of the texts in a cyptogram of symbols before deleting all of them one by one.

«i dont know everything. i dont think anyone does. not even the president.»

She feels sorry for them, in a way. They're trying so hard to live normals lives, or fight back, but there's really nothing that can be done. Once they've been on the radar, they get hunted. With more than one protocol out there, it's quite possible that there is more than one group of hunters.

«tell me what you know.»

Micah shakes his head at the screen. He can't; not if Medusa works for them. And the phone is just that, a phone. He can locate her, but he still can't know her agenda. And that's what truly is upsetting. He couldn't trust his own aunt.

« REBEL: WHY? SO YOU CAN SHOW THEM WHAT A RISK I AM? AND THEN TRY TO TRACK ME AGAIN? I'M AN ENIGMA. NOT EVEN EPSILON PROTOCOL CAN FIND ME ANYMORE. »

Thanks to Wireless, Epsilon Protocol can't find anyone. Micah smiles and realizes they probably already know what a risk he is. He presses his lips together and hmmms before typing.

« REBEL: I KNOW MORE THAN MOST. MULTIPLE PROTOCOLS. ALL DANGEROUS. ALL WITH DIFFERENT MANDATES. »

«you know about epsilon. i havent been able to find out much. says its compromised but theyre trying to get it fixed.»

It's probably more than Cody should be saying, but it's a 'terrorist' with possibly more information than she has. With the little tidbit that he's given her, she's willing to give a little more. Perhaps he'll be willing to part with further if she will.

«its not just the usa. i was brought from middle east.»

That should be safe enough, it's nothing that he wouldn't be able to find out if he was able to track her this quickly. Along the margin of her notebook, she jots down in swirly Arabic script a reminder to herself to check the board.

The Middle East. That draws another twitch from Micah.

« REBEL: DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE OTHER PROTOCOLS? ALPHA IS A BAG AND TAG OPERATION. EPSILON IS TRACKING. »

Beta is the one he's particularly interested in, yet knows nothing about. And he dare not mention gamma protocol, not until Jason Graham is safe.

It's nothing Cody doesn't already know, though he may be holding back, she is. In a bold maneuver, she sends a very carefully worded text message.

«i know about other protocols. but you haven't told me anything i don't already know. if you give me more i will do the same.»

Maybe he does have something, maybe he doesn't. Cody freezes, this is exactly the kind of hacker that Mark was looking for. Even if he can't help her, he'd be able to help on that front. She begins to tap out the message, but then quickly erases it, she'll wait for his reply before laying that job on him.

« REBEL: THEY'VE BEEN TESTING PROTOCOLS FOR SOME TIME. IN AUGUST THERE WAS A SUCCESSFUL TEST OF THE BETA PROTOCOL IN LAS VEGAS. IT MADE A BUILDING COME DOWN ON INNOCENT PEOPLE. I WAS THERE. HUNDREDS OF CASUALTIES. AT LEAST TWO DEATHS. »

Micah purses his lips again as he closes his eyes to fight the tears. This is what he wants to know about most at this point. He has more information, and he needs to connect with Graham, but until he decides if he can trust Cody, he's being cryptic, particularly about his own operations.

Clenching her jaw, Cody closes her eyes to do about the same thing as Micah, fight back the tears. She didn't want to believe that her own country was mounting a terrorist attack on itself, but it's not the first time in history that it's happened.

«human weapon of mass destruction. did not know about beta. there are more, at least all the way to kappa. i have a friend that needs a hacker. it might help here.»

She purses her lips for a moment and then starts jotting down the remainder of the conversation before deleting all the messages. This time, she deletes them all. If he replies, she'll still be able to contact him.

Micah hmmmms as he bites his lip. This isn't what he'd expected when he contacted Medusa. In fact, he's been looking for allies, but she works with them. That's a little unconventional.

« REBEL: I CAN HACK ALMOST ANYTHING IF I HAVE ENOUGH TIME AND CAN TOUCH IT (NOT ALWAYS NECESSARY, BUT HELPFUL). I TALK TO TECHNOLOGY. IF IT HAS AN ELECTRICAL IMPULSE; I CAN SPEAK TO IT. SOME ARE HARDER TO COMMUNICATE WITH THAN OTHERS. WHAT DOES YOUR FRIEND NEED HACKED? »

Cody's a little more willing to talk, as long as he's willing to help Mark. Pausing over the keys of her phone, she slowly types out the message. For Rebel it's probably an agonizing wait, for Cody it's more agonizing to have to communicate this way. There's no personal contact, she can't guage what he says or even what he does.

«you read my emails to mark. people he finds are disappearing. dont know enough about them to find them in protocol. either theyre well hidden or someone else is taking them. maybe another protocol. maybe someone else. mark and i were hostages of a terrorist, adham sayf udeen, possible that hes tied to kappa protocol.»

« REBEL: DISAPPEARING? AND NOT JUST GOING TO ALPHA THEN? WHAT IS KAPPA PROTOCOL? I KNOW ALPHA, BETA, EPSILON »

And gamma, but he's still not giving that up. Not yet, anyways.

« REBEL: WHAT DO I NEED TO HACK? I CAN DO A SEARCH FOR ADHAM SAYF UDEEN. THROUGH PRIVATE FILES AND THE LIKE AND SEE WHAT I COME UP WITH. OR DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER LEADS? »

Micah hesitates a moment before he adds.

« REBEL: THEY'RE USING REAL TERRORISTS TO HURT US NOW? THAT'S GREAT. »

«kappa protocol is what sayf udeen was talking about before i came here. he was in the usa a few weeks ago. dont know if he is now. talk to mark. need you to hack into lane industries.»

Cody's message doesn't impart much knowledge, but if Rebel can find the connection between Sayf Udeen and Lane Industries without anyone getting hurt or taken it's a bonus. From around her neck, Cody pulls her dogtags. The chain has a new attachment, a small flash drive. If the hacker can pull the information off without her having to send it anywhere it's a bonus. If not… well then it's not a complete loss, he's got something to work with.

«if i plug a drive into the computer here, can you pull stuff off it without me having to send anything?»

« REBEL: I CAN HACK IN WITHOUT THEM NOTICING ME. IT WOULD BE EASIER IF I MANGED TO GET INTO THE BUILDING, BUT I CAN PROBABLY DO IT FROM A DISTANCE UNLESS THEIR FILES ARE ENTIRELY OFFLINE. »

Micah grins at the notion of hacking into something. This should help him get things moving again. The more contact he has with people the more damage he can do.

« REBEL: YES. I CAN ACCESS AND EVEN COPY THE FILES WITHOUT YOU LOADING THEM ANYWHERE. »

He connects with her computer further and awaits a data transfer of sorts.

Cody's definitely not sure about this. She wasn't right with trusting as much as she did to Bennet, but she was pointed in his direction, it was implied she'd be able to trust him. But Bennet isn't on the run, who knows what his relationship is to his daughter. With one firm movement, the agent plugs the flash into the cafe computer and waits.

«the logo on the file is for lane industries. sayf udeen is the one talking about kappa protocol. i think hes buying evolved to use as human weapons. heard about it the first time when i was his hostage. let me know when i can disconnect.»

« REBEL: YOU CAN DISCONNECT. »

Micah openly frowns at the contents. Human weapons. Kappa is about trading weapons. And Gamma is about controlling them. This is all starting to make sense; complete and total sense. Alpha catches, Beta destroys (?), Epsilon tracks, Gamma controls, and Kappa is the buying and selling of human weapons — weapons only worth buying on the black market. Destructive weapons. Weapons that could end the world.

« REBEL: WE NEED TO STOP THEM. I HAVE A QUESTION. I HAD ACCESS TO SOME INFORMATION. NEXT TO SEVERAL PEOPLES' NAMES THERE WAS AN ABBREVIATION: WG OR NWG. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THESE MEAN? »

It doesn't take even a second for Cody to figure out the meanings. She's been doing the same thing with every detainee in the building. Even assessing how much damage one particular person could do if trained.

«weapons grade. non-weapons grade. where did you get that? military? another protocol? random internet site?»

If it's one of the protocols, then she's definitely not far off the mark with at least some of her assumptions. With another swift motion, she pulls the stick out from the USB port and puts it back on her chain. Then she gets up from her station and walks over to grab another coffee.

Weapon's Grade. Non-weapons grade. Monica: WG. Tracy: WG. Kitty: NWG. Jack: NWG. He frowns deeply. Thinking of his friends and family as human weapons is painful enough, but it's worse to think of himself that way.

« REBEL: I GOT IT FROM A SELF-PROCLAIMED GHOST. SHE USED THE EPSILON PROTOCOL TRACKING DEVICE TO TALK TO ME. IT WAS THE THREAT LIST WITH NEW NOTATIONS. SHE SHOWED ME. IT'S OFFICIAL: THEY INTEND TO USE US AS WEAPONS. »

He blinks back tears again. Tracy had been WG, that's why they sent Gabriel after her. Probably. And now she's dead because of it. It's official: Micah is going to launch a rescue mission.

« REBEL: I'M GOING TO STOP THEM. I CAN ORGANIZE PEOPLE LIKE ME. I CAN FIND PEOPLE. I CAN COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE THOUGH ANY ELECTRONIC MEANS. THEY WON'T WIN. » and then as if taking an exact line from Tracy's book he adds « THEY'LL PAY. »
