David Berman is a mild-mannered paper salesman and former political activist who discovers the ability to control people with his words.

David Berman spent most of his twenties in Africa, working as a member of the Peace Corps; in Tanzania, he met his (now ex) wife. When he returned to the United States in the late eighties he was briefly an active political activist and author until his divorce, after which he rapidly settled down.

Since he stopped writing and settled down, David remarried, redivorced, and has spent the last ten years growing increasingly boring and focused on advancing his career as a white-collar office worker. He kept writing, but has apparently failed to get a sentence published in over seven years.

One day he asked an irritating co-worker to throw himself off the roof, and he immediately did so.

Things have gotten very strange for David.

  • March 5th, 2008 — David's catastrophic first power application takes place. He is, of course, not implicated at all in his co-worker's sudden suicide.

  • "I don't know what's happening to me — do you?"
  • "I can't talk to you. I'm sorry. Just—I can't. Please."

  • David has written several books, including works of non-fiction and a pair of novels. None sold particularly well, were all published in the eighties, and are presently out of print.
  • He does not tell anyone about his past, and most of his friends and colleagues only know of David as a middle-aged, middle-class failure sort of office drone.
