Summary: Alice and Meryl (With Megan) Go to the hospital to visit Benji. If you're in the Company, a memo went out to everyone announcing the BENJAMIN HAS A GIRLFRIEND. Also, Megan takes Identity's knife and twists it a little deeper. Poor Ben.

Date It Happened: 28 SEPTEMBER 2007

Oops, Knife in your Chest!

Company Hospital, Secret Location

Benjamin hasn't moved much since being put in the hospital bed sometime in the wee hours of morning. Despite wanting to get up and get to work, it's just not possible. The tv in the room has been left on, he was flipping channels, but that got boring and he caved in to the pain medication and IV drip. So he's dozing off and on.

—-

Alice finds the room she's looking for eventually. Peeking in on Benjamin, she steps into his room and moves on up to the bed. Once she's there, she reaches down and flicks his ear. Hard.

—-

The flicking of the ear doesn't go missed. Benjamin's not /that/ doped to the gills. The flicking has him starting awake, moving and lashing out with his ability. After the previous night, he's not sure just what the heck is going on!

—-

Hand re-stitched and once again bandaged, Meryl climbs the stairs in the private hospital toward Benjamin's room. Her hair is back in a ponytail, and somewhat shorter than it's been… That's because it was singed in the fire and she had to chop a bit of it off. Giving Meryl any sharp objects is never a particularly good idea, but she hasnt done a horrible job cutting her own hair. It's just… A little uneven. Hair grows back! Unlike fingers.

She's also a little red. It looks like a sunburn, but it's not nearly as bad as some of the other people got it. Under her arm, she has what looks to be a box of chocolates… Perhaps she's returning the favour. Unfortunately, she ate them all on the way up. OOPS. Eventually arriving at Ben's room, she peeks in. "Oh, sorry. I didn't know you had company. I brought you an empty box."

—-

Benjamin's lashing out has Alice's eyelids drooping. For a second anyway. Then she must realize what's going on because she bends down and says, "Benji. It's me." She turns her head and eyes Meryl, straightening at the injured man's bedside. There's really no words for the other visitor. She just stares.

—-

Expression changing to apology and relief when Benjamin realizes it's Alice there, "I'm so sorry honey, I didn't .." Smiling a bit dopily up at the woman he says, "I'm glad to see you." As with earlier, he sounds short of breath, and is quiet. His hand pauses halfway to reaching for Alice's face when Meryl walks in, and he waves at her. "Hey Meryl, you're okay.. I was wondering what was happening with everyone. I've only seen doctors and St. James today."

—-

Meryl holds out the box to Benjamin. Sorry, she got a bit hungry on the way over, but it smells like chocolate still. There's that, right? Taped to the top is an envelope, in which is a card. On the card is a dog with really big eyes and a party hat, and on the inside, it says 'Happy 12th Birthday, Son!' And under it, written in pencil, is 'Get Well Soon! <3 Meryl' Green eyes look toward Alice, and she smiles. "Heard you got stabbed, Bingo. That's so cool."

—-

"I'm glad you're alive," Alice tells Benjamin, "You ever get tired of getting beaten the crap out of?" Smirking a little, she eyes Meryl some more. But she still doesn't say anything directly to her.

—-

The options for Megan at this point seem to be to stay in Meryl's head and go along for the ride, or head back to her burned and very painful body. Though it takes some mental effort on Megan's part, she's opting for the riding around in Meryl's head. It's not like she can talk to Meryl without using her own vocal chords - she's not a telepath. For the moment there's nothing that would betray the fact that anyone other than Alice and Meryl are listening in to this conversation. Even if Megan isn't all that pleased to be in this room.

—-

Benjamin doesn't mind the empty box. He knows Meryl meant well. He takes it and smiles at the other agent, and boggles at the card when he opens the envelope. He can't help it, he laughs at the card, but groans in pain. Not a good thing to do. "I guess if you're going to get stabbed, get stabbed by Sylar," he says as he sets the box aside on the table by the bed. He offers a faint shrug and grin up at Alice, "I guess I'm the Company punching bag. I tried my best yesterday, it wasn't good enough. I heard other people got worse, and killed. I can't complain." Despite knowing Alice not wanting anyone to know she's gushy, he still reaches a hand over for hers.

—-

Ah, speaking of worse — OH HEY, look! Bingo has a GIRLFRIEND! Man, soon everyone in the Company is going to know, and Meryl has to turn away from the bed so she can giggle without being seen. She covers this up well with a cough, before turning back. There's still a smile in her eyes, though. "Oh, you're not a punching bag, honestly. Unfortunately, we lost some really good agents yesterday, and there are many more here." She knows that Benjamin caes about Megan. She also knows that Megan's probably hearing every word she's saying. Even so… "Megan was very badly hurt. Burned. Niel Youngblood got it pretty bad, too, but… Well, I'll be looking for a Healer."

—-

It's subtle, but Alice doesn't move her hand when Benjamin puts his on it. She might even curl her thumb around his, but she otherwise show a whole lot of affection for the man besides this. "I'm surprised anyone lived through that at all. From what I saw of the devastation, it was pretty thorough. They weren't messing around." Her jaw sets a little and she looks down at the injured man. "I just wish I was there. I should have been there with you."

—-

No! Do not! Tell Benjamin! Sigh. There are times when Megan wishes she were able to do more than just sit behind Meryl's eyes. Technically she could try and take the woman over and march her from the room - but that wouldn't be very nice when Meryl's been pretty good about the fact that the Scotswoman is all but spying on what she's doing. Seeing the whole girlfriend Benjamin thing, though, flushes Megan, which may just carry over to Meryl. Instead of embarrassment, it's anger, though. Didn't know. Wasn't trying anything. What a liar.

—-

"St. James said there were some lives lost. I'm sorry I wasn't more effective with stopping anyone down in level 5," Benjamin sounds frustated at himself and his failure. His expression only darkens further the more Meryl speaks, "What? Oh God.. where is she at?" Burned.. bad enough to need a healer.. He leans his head back against the pillow, "No kidding. We outnumbered them, but still.. They were so powerful."

—-

MEGAN ARE YOU SEEING THIS BENJAMIN HAS A WOMAN. OMG. Meryl is immature, yes, but there's really nothing anyone can do about it and suddenly she's feeling angry, like she would very much like to punch him. Oh, well that's rather strange! She makes a face, looks to one side, then to the other, and decides it's probably in everyone's best interest not to deck the guy. To answer the question of where Megan's at, though… "D'you mean — Oh, well, she's in the ICU." Certainly not in Meryl's head. Maybe that's why Megan was so angry? See, Meryl can be perceptive at times! "Also, she's in my head." …Just not right now.

—-

"That would probably be why they were locked up, Benj. It'd be like a fluffy bunny going up against starved dobermans," Alice says. She eyes Meryl some more and finally says, "I'm glad you made it through. We're going to need all the people we can get to stop the ones that got out." Her hand remains underneath Benjamin's. Her thumb remains curled around his. Even though she's pretending that it's invisible and nobody can see it otherwise.

—-

"I don't suppose they'll let me go visit her. How much was she burned?" Benjamin is concerned yes. The comment about Megan being in Meryl's head doesn't seem to phase him. "That's nice of you to let her do that, she would be bad off otherwise." Turning his attention back up to Alice, he nods. "I see now why Dr. Eames didn't want to discuss level 5. The situation could have been worse, but still, this shouldn't have happened. As soon as I'm out of here, I'm doing what I can to help out."

—-

"I dunno, sometimes fluffy bunnies can kick some serious arse," Meryl ponders, as if imagining Benjamin taking on giant robots on his own. Several giant robots. If nothing else, it would be interesting to watch.

Sorry, Megan. "Third degree burns, everywhere. She's not looking too great at the moment, but at least she's not in pain. I wasn't assigned to one of the Level Five cases, so I'm going to do my best to find a healer. I've go' one in mind already. Been going through some files. Hopefully I can get her in here without…" She pauses. "Well, I guess I've got to find her first, aye?"

—-

Alice is quiet now, except for squeezing Benjamin's hand back finally.

—-

Benjamin winces visibly at Meryl, not questioning her seriousness. This is enough to make anyone serious. "That's a good call, burns aren't easy to recover from. Someone who can heal would be nice for everyone that's been hurt like Megan." He smiles a little at Meryl, "Yeah, find the healer."

—-

Meryl's seen Megan, and she honestly couldn't imagine living life with that degree of burning all over. Sure, it's possible, but why would you do it, knowing you could be healed, that there are healers out there? And yes, Meryl's being serious at the moment. Despite the chocolate, she's still worn down. "I'll have to figure out where to start. At least this one isn't completely classified. Hopefully the ninjas haven't already found her, or we're in trouble. They're pesky, ninjas are. They take whatever you need and hide it." She shakes her head. "I— We'll find her, though." Looking to Alice, Meryl adds, nodding toward the door, "D'you want us to maybe…?"

—-

"No. I'll go. I should… I mean. I have things I should be doing. Work," Alice says, glancing Meryl's way with just a hint of blush in her features. It isn't hard to see, given her pale complexion. She looks down at Benjamin and says, "See you later. Next time you try to take on Sylar, remember to bring me along, 'kay?" Then she snogs him. Kissing. With tongue. In front of people. Two technically if one counts Megan. Pulling away, she straightens and saunters out of the room.

—-

Benjamin doesn't care right now if he's causing himself and Alice future embarrassment by the simple gesture of holding her hand. He could pop with relief that he's here to embarrass themselves. He smiles at Meryl, "You'll find the healer, I know you can and will. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know." At Meryl's question to Alice, he looks up at the woman, not sure if she's pressed on time, or has to dash off on orders. Then he gets the answer to his unasked question, a very enjoyable answer. One he unabashedly returns, in front of people. Not caring about the display at all. "Yes m'am. We'll take him out together."

—-

What Megan /wants/ to say is, "I'm right here, you know" or "Don't pity me" or many many other things ranging in cutting to just annoyed. However, the extended stay in Meryl's brain has sort of exhausted Megan in her own sort of way. It's hard to force her to do anything. Especially when she's so annoyed and angry at the whole situation it's hard to concentrate. So. Meryl may just feel the urge to spew some unintelligble garble a la Steve Carrell in Bruce Almighty. But then, Megan will be quiet.

—-

This time, Meryl can't hold back the squeal. Poor Ben, and poor Alice. Just like the fact that Benjamin shot her, she'll be holding this over his head, too. It's so adorable. "I think Aahhhgghgdskg. Sssszzksd." Blinking, frowning, looking for all the world that she's confused out of her skull, it actually takes Meryl a couple seconds to recover from that one. "Ah, Benjamin, just so you know, I think Megan would like to beat the hell out of you with a frozen chicken, before feeding your body piece by piece to some great white sharks. Until I can remedy this, I believe it would be in your best interests not to visit. I can't be responsible for what happens if she wakes up and velociraptors appear to tear your face off."

—-

Maybe Alice caught that last bit out of Meryl. Maybe not. Either way, she's got an unpleasant smile on her face as she re-enters the hallway and heads back out of the hospital wing.

—-

Benjamin blinks and looks at Meryl as she sort of.. verbally seizes there. What the.. It's enough to break him from his kiss induced stupor. "Wha… why? I mean beyond the usual.." He looks confused then, ohs. Some realizations start to dawn on him. "I.. it's.. Alice left for months, she thought she was going to be gone for good. She was on a mission when I met Megan. Alice came back after Megan was brought in." He raises a hand to rub at his face, "I just keep making myself look worse and worse to her. I wasn't using her, I wasn't.." he sinks back against the bed, exhausted and just.. "Either she's going to believe me or not. I'm tired of explaining myself."

—-

Whatever. "Maybe you're tired of it because you've got a lot of things to explain, Benjamin." This time the anger that flares up doesn't hinder Megan's attempt to use Meryl's voice to speak for her; instead, it fuels it. She's still got a Deatley temper and though she does feel weird using Meryl to fight for her, she'll do it when she feels the need to. Though the voice and accent is Australian and Meryl's, the intonation is all Megan's. Sorry, Meryl, hopefully the injured party will know that this is a Scotswoman scorned. "Just about everything you've ever said to me is a lie and yet you keep on trying to play the poor injured victim. Well, enjoy the roll, now you've got the wound to help the act." And then Megan'll fall silent. Moodily. Inside of Meryl's head.

—-

Having control seized from her without expecting it is one of the most upside-down feelings ever, but Meryl can't really do anything as Megan tears Benjamin a new one, and so she takes a back seat until the angry woman is finished. Her own features are clouded with anger, though the expression instantly changes to surprise when she's able to move her own face again. "…Whoa," she says. She's pretty sure that that's the best Megan's ever done with the voice— "…Wait a minute, you lied to her? Benjamin, you should be ashamed of yourself, honestly." And that anger returns in a lesser form - it's more of a pout, coming from Meryl. Maybe she's still feeling that surge of rage from Megan… Who knows? In any case, she crosses her arms and waits for the explanation.

—-

Benjamin just stares up at Meryl/Megan. He wasn't sure what kind of progress Megan was making with her ability. Any pleasure he was taking in this step forward.. Gone with what is said. ".. Megan.. there's a difference between lying and witholding information. You didn't need to know who I worked for, and.. hell with it. Fine. I'm a big fat liar. Deal with it. We've all had our share of bitter feelings at being kidnapped by this place. I got over it and you will too." He flashes a dark look of hurt at Meryl, "It doesn't matter, she's not going to believe me.. I'm not going to bother anymore." Resting his arm across his forehead, he calms himself down, "Thank you for visiting Meryl.. just.. I should rest some more. Especially if I want to still help you with Dorsey." On top of everything else.

—-

It's a tough situation for Meryl. Megan understands that. Or, she will when she's calmed down a bit. For one reason or another, the woman is in the middle of this all. And the only way she will stop being so is when Megan goes back to her own body. Tellingly, there is no response from Megan. But Meryl - probably from breathing heavier and feeling a lot moodier - will most likely get the fact that the Scotswoman is not at all happy with Benjamin or his answer.

—-

For her part, Meryl's calming down a little more now. Even if they can't communicate with each other, they're still sharing emotion, and it's something that's nearly impossible to sort out. She's not sure if she likes that too much, but she's not about to tell Megan to go lie around in pain for the next God-Knows-How-Long. "Megan," she says, trying to think of something amusing to say, something funny, something that will diffuse the situation, but all she can think about are aliens, or perhaps rhinos, and neither seems appropriate. Reaching forward with her good hand, she briefly takes Ben's, gives it a squeeze, and turns to leave. As she reaches the door she turns, opens her mouth to say something else, but feeling the rage building again, Meryl thinks better of it, and goes, closing the door behind her.

—-

With Megan firmly convinced that he's lying, Benjamin doesn't see the point in pushing the issue or trying to plead his case. He looks guiltier and guiltier. He's also not used to being in this kind of position. When Meryl (with Megan!) walks out of the room, he just hits the button on the IV to push another dose of pain meds to help knock him back out to sleep.
