Passeriformes

Bronx Zoo, NYC

A nice day at the zoo. No clouds, there's no rain in the forecast, and all the animals are out so that people can see them. It's pretty busy, considering the fact that it's a nice day, but since it's a Monday, it's not as crowded as it was over the weekend. There are lots of people taking pictures, and some that are even drawing the animals. Children run here and there, with parents chasing after them amid the fenced-in exhibits. Daphne's been working since early in the morning, and she's heading back across the zoo to the birds of prey enclosure. Because running would just wear her out, she's riding a little motorized two-wheel scooter with the Bronx Zoo logo emblazoned on one of the bars. It's slow going because of the crowds; at the moment, she's stopped, with her foot on the ground to let some people go by.

—-

Marcus is out walking with his cousin, "So last time I dropped by here there was a Rhino charging people down the main throughfare. Friend of mine took some kids and hid in the bathroom right over there."

—-

"Really?! I hope nobody got hurt" Kitty looks towards Daphne and notices that she works at the zoo "Excuse me, are there any red-tailed hawks here? They are so fascinating to me" 'Fascinating' seems to be Kitty's Word of the Week. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. She grins eagerly.

—-

The talk between the two cousins earns a look from the zookeeper, who turns, looking toward them. They hope no one got hurt. Tch. Well, she wasn't run over by the rhino, but a careless patron kind of knocked her head against a post, and /that/ hurt. Mostly, it was just the hit she took to her pride that stung the most. But that's a story for another time. Keeping her foot on the ground and switching the electric scooter off for the time being, she nods to Kitty's question. "Yeah, there's a couple. You see them wild around here, too, if you keep your eyes open." Daphne can hear them… More than just background noise, but actual voices. Sometimes, it's disturbing, and way too distracting.

—-

Marcus smiles, "A few people got injured, my bosses daughter got ran over, somone of the patrons I know had to be taken to the emergency room." he shakes his head, "It was a bit of a cluster actually, I tried to help as much as I could."

—-

"Ok, cool thanks. Could you possibly show us the way?" Kitty tilts her head at Marcus, "My hero" She snickers and ruffles Marcus' hair, trying to act like the /older/ cousin, obviously failing. "Were you here for Zoo Gone Wild?" she directs her question to Daphne.

—-

They still don't know how the rhino got out. Or, well, Daphne does, but she can't exactly go telling people that the rhino told her that one second it was in its pen, and the next, it wasn't. Which doesn't make sense unless one considers the fact that there could be someone out there who can teleport animals. It's weird. "Uh. Yeah, I'm going that way anyway." Zoo Gone Wild? "You mean when the rhino escaped, yeah, I was here." She isn't going to say that she was /unconscious./ Motioning toward the birds of prey, she pushes the scooter along. It's not too far away, anyway. "It was kind of a mess. A bunch of our songbirds got out, too." But they came /back./ For /SOME REASON./

—-

Marcus falls in behind Dapne, letting Kitty catch the story, just listening so far.

—-

Kitty follows Daphne, "Never heard of a songbird. Or maybe I have and I just don't remember hearing the name" Kitty says and looks around at the people as she walks around the zoo. "I love the zoo. I use to love seeing the big cats when I was younger. But that might be because of my name" she chuckles.

—-

"Songbirds. You know, the kind that sing. Buntings, and birds of paradise, parakeets, I guess. There's lots of kinds." Pausing to direct someone over to where the elephants are (Really, that's the most common question! HOW CAN YOU LOSE AN ELEPHANT!) Daphne continues walking toward the birds of prey. "I like working here. It's a good atmosphere." Giving the girl an odd look, she asks, "So what's your name? Tiger? Lion?" …Weird Hippie parents and their weird names!

—-

Marcus messes with Kitty's hair, "Her name is Kitten actually, she was the cutest little thing when her parents brought her home from the zoo adopt a bay monkey program"

—-

"Ah I know those!" She smiles and looks about as she answers, "Nah, it's Kitty. Or as my friend Jane likes to call me, Kat, but my cat's name is Tiger" she winks and stretches as she plays with her fingerless gloves.

Oh! There was a zebra! They are so cute! Kitty thinks to herself, all the animals mesmerize her because she hasn't been in some time. She punches Marcus playfully and mocks glares at him. "That is why Tamara is the favorite cousin and not you" she sticks her tongue and puts her hands in her pocket as she walks.

—-

Yeah, songbirds, just everyday ordinary birds… that sing. Well, maybe she just didn't recognise the term. "They're also called passarines?" Daphne offers helpfully. Hell, with the people around this city, Kitty could very well be from, like, Afghanistan or something.

They're approaching the birds of prey now. It's easy to hear the distinctive trilling call of the bald eagle, and it won't be long before the two can see them in their enclosure. "They're right around here," Daphne adds, leading them around to the other side of the exhibit.

—-

Marcus looks over to see when she's indictating, trying to figure out what the birds she is talking about are. He smiles a little at Kitty, "That's only because you like girls more then boys."

—-

"Oh! I remember my grandma, showing me a picture book with them in it when I was younger" Kitty grins as she sees the hawks. They are beautiful birds. "Thank you so much! What's your name, by the way?" The young woman looks at the hawks and smiles.
Then she gaps at Marcus, "I do not like GIRLS! Well I do but not in that way! See if I help YOU on your next date. I hope you fall down the stairs and the most beautiful girl walks by and laughs at you" she looks towards Daphne, "He is soo mean, don't ya think?" She winks and grins, her eyes twinkling in the light.

—-

"Me? I'm Daphne." She points the name in block letters on her shirt. "I work with the birds of prey, so I'm here almost every day." She's trying to ignore the banter between Marcus and Kitty. "So you've never seen a songbird before?" she asks Kitty incredulously, looking over her shoulder as the birds in their enclosures preen - and speak softly. They're hungry, which is understandable, but it's not quite time for food yet. She can't help adding, "There's nothing wrong with liking girls, to be fair."

—-

Marcus grins a little and crosses his hands behind him, listening to the two of them, but not making any more comments to get himself in trouble.

—-

Kitty shakes her head, "I want to see one. That would be cool" She laughs softly, "I don't have any problems with gay people. My best friend is gay" She punches Marcus again in the chest while he has his hand behind his back. Now he might have learned his lesson. If only she had electrokinesis and could fry him and make his clothes disintegrate. Now /that/ would be embarrassing. Kitty hums as she thinks of all the different ways to torture Marcus.

—-

Giving Kitty another incredulous look, she half-smiles. "Well, I just…" she starts, then shakes her head. Ah, well. She has to get back to work, anyway, so she'll leave the cousins to beat up on each other. "Here're the hawks, in any case." She hops back on her scooter, even though she's reached her destination. She's still got to take it with her, and it's more fun to ride than walk it around! Anyway, if they were to talk of abilities, Daphne would have to argue that zapping someone with electricity would be painful, not embarrassing. "You guys take care. I'll see you later."

—-

Marcus looks over at Kitty and shrugs, "Sorry if I chased her off, I know you have a thing for girls like that" He grins a bit and ducks.

—-

"See ya! And thanks again!" She waves to Daphne and glances at Marcus, "I so HATE you right now!" Kitty bops Marcus on the head and snickers.
