An enigmatic figure at best, Richard straddles the line between living in society and living completely outside of it; not known by many in the city just yet, he's a criminal, a burglar, and a stalker without peer. What the shadow thief's goals are - if any - remain a mystery. Perhaps he's just trying to figure out this whole business and where these powers come from…

History

Richard Montenegro was the usual sort of high-school outcast; a geek interested more in sci-fi and fantasy books than sports and socializing with the popular crowd, he took the usual punishments for not fitting in very well. He wasn't a huge brain, either, so he couldn't earn credit with others by getting high grades - he played D&D, read books everyone thought was 'geeky', and even drew a bit, although the latter wasn't good enough to let him get in with the art geeks. He was overweight, out of shape, and generally nothing impressive. Although like many such outcasts, he was convinced that he was special, that some day he'd get back at his tormentors and show them…

Unlike most such outcasts, it turned out that he was.

After being forced to flee from one of the school's bullying jocks, his powers stirred to wakefulness; becoming one with a shadow to get out of the way, he found himself truly special for once. And that vindication was, really, all he needed to stir him out of a morass of self-hatred and start him on— well, it certainly wasn't a positive path, but it was healthier for -him- anyway. He worked out, used his powers to cheat on tests and blackmail the teachers, and generally got himself in order while shamelessly casting the world about him into disorder. After high school it got even worse, as he grew, and found more uses for his abilities…

And then, they found him. They found him, captured him, and he only escaped by chance - and he didn't even know who they were. He was forced to go on the run, underground, and be more cautious. And that's what brought him to New York City.

Quotes

  • "Humanitarianism? Let me tell you something about humanity, lady; humanity's just a crowd of people who hate themselves, hate their neighbors, and don't have the testicles to do a damn thing about it! I don't see why I should care what a bunch of sheep content to die a little more every day think, do, or feel. They never cared about me."
  • "Your men know, and they fear and respect you for that. Fear and respect grow into legends, and legends grow into whispers… watch yourself, Mistress of Pain. None of us are as invincible as we might like. I'm sure we'll speak again."
