History
Sean's grandparents are the last of his family to have been born in Hong Kong; all four, childhood friends who ended up partnering off (as Sean would put it) came over on the same boat and settling in the same area. Each of the women had a baby within a space of about two weeks; Sean's parents grew up together, and it was no surprise that the childhood friends eventually wed and had two children, Sean and his twin brother, Evan. Their parents, Yat and Carman, decided to give them Anglicized names and speak only English in their presence to help them grow up normally in their neighbours' eyes, though they still went to Chinese School to learn Mandarin.
Sean and Evan grew up very close, as is generally expected of twins, even fraternal such as Evan and Sean. As they grew up, though, they also grew apart - Evan was going the more ambitious route of Life Sciences in university, planning on getting into med school, while Sean, who was easily as smart but had trouble paying attention or the proper amount of respect to his teachers throughout school, stopped school once he'd graduated, planning on becoming a bartender.
Bartending was the ideal job for Sean. He worked five nights a week, and usually went out drinking the other two; he had sex with pretty much anything that moved, male or female, winning everyone over with his beautiful smile and boyish charm; he made a decent living on tips; he bought his house and finished payments on his own bar before his twin was even out of school.
But life was definitely not perfect for Sean. He resented his brother's intelligence every drunken morning after. He resented his brother's new wife every time he rolled over and realized that the nameless girl beside him wasn't nearly as beautiful without beer goggles blurring his vision. He resented his brother's new, extremely well-paid job every time he realized that there were guys nearly ten years younger than him doing the same job he was. He resented his brother's degree every time some snob called him an uneducated idiot, and he felt the need to break something heavy and wooden on the bastard's face.
But, tainted though his life may have been, it was a better life than a lot of high school graduates without university degrees, and at least he wasn't worrying about mortgage payments or rent. Or groceries or anything, even - he had a pretty penny saved up from half a lifetime of quite generous tips until his bar burned down. One night, a fire started in the bakery next door, and the resulting blaze took out about half a block's worth of businesses, taking six people's lives and about seventy people's livelihoods. Including Sean's. After that, he was pretty much out of work - as pretty as his face was, large-breasted women made better tips; it was as simple as that. He eventually found fairly stable work as a part-time bartender at two different bars, and turned to petty theft to supplement his income.
One thing led to another, and petty theft grew into not-so-petty theft - soon, he was stealing cars, breaking into houses and rifling through jewelry, anything he could get his hands on to make some cash. He found, while reaching inside a car to unlock it, that if he really concentrated, he was able to stretch his arm a little farther than he expected it to go - and then tried again and was surprised to find that it could go even further - and further - and further, until he could unlock the back door on the other side of the car from a front window! And with just as little thought, he could bring his arm back to normal length. It flickered across his mind momentarily to go public with this discovery, make some quick bucks as a freak show - or miracle, depending on how you looked at it - but decided that illicit acts were much more fun - and much more profitable. The once-promising twin of a well-liked neurosurgeon had been reduced to hiding from the police day in and day out.
Now, however, he's stopped stealing, and stopped drinking, and stopped needing to hide from the police! Well, he's stopped stealing and hiding from the police, at least - and his drinking's much closer to under control.
