Shop Descriptions
Lobby
Beyond the smoky glass door is what can only be described as a blend of the simple elegance of tradition and the ultra-techno look of modern-day New York. Monochromatic black is predominating on both walls and in the durable, industrial carpet covering the floor. Dominating one wall is a huge Japanese kanji for "Strength" outlined in black-light neon that makes it look almost three-dimensional. Two original paintings by the owner hang to either side of the kanji, their brilliant colors almost dazzling against the solid black wall. Below them is a futon couch with a black metal frame, in front of which is a glass and chrome table, which is actually a functional aquarium. There is an open room that have large windows that allow anyone in the lobby to watch the work being done inside the room. A water cooler and the latest arcade machine rest against one of the walls.
Several professionally bound volumes of photographs and tattoo designs offer customers a wide example of human canvases to peruse. One wall is covered with nearly fifty picture frames that cover the entire wall, showing off more designs for tattoos. Across from this is a glass display case containing items for body piercing and ointments for the care of new tattoos. Above this hangs more original artwork by the studio owner, highlighted by track lighting and more neon. The acrid odor of astringent tantalizes the senses, and techno music plays either loud or soft (depending on the artist's mood) in the background.
A large hallway turns around a corner, which leads to the small room where the artists craft their masterpieces on human canvas. A curtain of plastic neon beads sections off the entrance of the hallway. The walls of the hallway are flat black, the better to show off photographs of completed body art and tattoo designs. There are two other doors in the hallway. One is designated as a public restroom, and is marked "Private". There are several large speakers placed throughout the room in each of the corners. Tucked behind the counter, next to a speaker, is a black mini refrigerator.
Tattoo Room
The room is smaller compared to the lobby, but still has an open feel. The floor is a tiled black and white checkers and the white walls are covered with various pictures of the employees and a few autographed pictures of celebrities who have had work done here. In the center of the room is a large black leather tattooing chair with a stool positioned next to it.
Along the back wall is a long counter that houses the various bottles of tattooing ink, broken down tattoo guns, a box of black rubber gloves, a small plastic bin that houses the unused piercing needles and a large sterilizing machine along with a number of various other things. Hanging on the wall next to the plastic bin is a red hazmat bin for the used needles. A large plastic jar sits on a shelf next to the exit with a sign taped to it that reads: Tipping is not a city in China.
Manager's Office
The office is fairly large with a plush dark red carpet and white walls which hold various pictures of Dani and different people, including one of the Mayor of New York getting a tattoo. In front of a large window sits a large oak desk with a leather seat behind it. The desk is covered with various pieces of paper. Against one wall rests a large bookshelf with various art books from different genres. Next to the bookshelf is a smaller desk with a glass top and a light underneath it. Against the opposite wall is a pair of metal filing cabinets next to a potted plant and a water cooler. Above the filing cabinets is a large picture frame which houses a large drawing of the Slinging Ink logo.
