Sweet Tooth

Sugar

The door to Sugar lets out a small ting! as one Gabriel Gray enters. The moment he crosses the threshold, he takes a deep breath, filling his nose with the delicious smell that fills the shop. Muffins, cakes, cupcakes, chocolate, and spices, allc ombine for a quite unique smell. He discovered this place recently on his way to work, and he's been in every day since then. It's quite good!

Stepping out of the back room with another rack of goodies, Zelda glances about the store and smiles at Gabriel. The apron she's wearing is powdered lightly in flour and batter, as are a few brushes against her cheek, but she doesn't seem to notice it. Sliding her tray of cookies into the cooling rack, she slides off her oven mitts and places them onto the top of the counter. "Hello again. What can I get for you?" As he's the only customer for the moment, she's in no rush.

"Hi," Gabriel says, mulling over the various items on display. "Let's see…" he says, pointing at the blueberry muffins (his favorite). "I'll need three of those… two chocolate chip… a few of those, and then a tea and a coffee," he says, moving up the counter. "How are you today?" the ex-killer asks, giving Zelda a small smile.

Zelda grabs a sheet of wax paper and starts to pull out all the requested goodies from the display case. Setting them out on a tray, she goes back for more. "Have a sweet tooth?" she smiles at Gabriel finally pulling out the last of his baked goods. Obviously, she doesn't mind him ordering a lot of her food. Turning around, she pours out a cup of coffee in a paper cup and then goes for the hot water. "What kind of tea would you like?"

"A little bit, I suppose," Gabriel says with a smile in Zelda's direction. It's not even a small one. A rare thing for the ex-killer. "I'm heading home for the day, and I thought I would introduce a friend to your baked goods." As for what kind of tea, Gabriel gives her a small shake of the head. "Just regular, unsweetened."

"Can't say I blame you. I've got one myself, unsurprisingly." Filling up the second cup with hot water and a regular unsweetened tea, Zelda puts it right back down on the counter and counts up his total. She tells it to him and she gives him a smile. "I like the sound of that. I'll add in a business card just in case your friend gets a sweet tooth, too."

"Unsurprisingly," Gabriel echoes, a hint of dry sarcasm in his voice, a smirk crossing his features. The good kind. "Sounds like a good deal," he continues, pulling his wallet out and placing down what's needed to pay for the goods. "I'll make sure she gets the card, too."

At the mention of the she, Zelda gives Gabriel a half smile. "She's very lucky to have a friend like you to bring her mouthwateringly good pastries." There's a bit of a hint as to what kind of friend that would be. Plus, she's not shy to let other people know what should be the worth of her baking. "And I'm not just saying that because you're basically advertising for me."

"Oh, it's no problem, really— I like this place," Gabriel says, waving a hand in the general direction of the shop. "I work just down the road at my watchshop, and it's right along the way.. but the convenience isn't why I keep stopping in," he continues, returning the half-smile Zelda gives him. "She's one of my neighbors that I see from time to time."

"A watch shop?" Obviously, in the few times that Gabriel has come in, Zelda had yet to hear what he does for a living. "That's interesting, I don't think I've heard of anyone having a watch shop in years." Maybe since she was little. As for his neighbor and why he keeps coming in, she grins. "It's the muffins, isn't it? I make a killer muffin."

"Yeah, Gray & Sons. Just a few blocks down." As for the fact she hasn't heard of one in years? Gabriel shrugs slightly. "It's what I know. I'm good at it, I suppose." Which, of course, is an understatement, but then he can't go on telling her about his ability that makes him so good at fixing watches. As for muffins? Gabriel grins. "You got me. I'll admit that the blueberry muffin is my favorite."

"I'm don't doubt it." And why should she? You'd have to be good at fixing watches in order to have a store entirely devoted to it. Zelda thinks a moment. "You know, I have an old watch that used to be my grandmothers. It hasn't worked in years. Never really thought about getting it repaired, but if you wouldn't mind, I could bring it 'round to your shop sometime?" As she talks, she gives him a wry smile. "It's one of my special recipes." And, just because he complimented them, she slips an extra muffin into his bag for free, though she doesn't make a remark about what she did either way.

"Oh, really?" Gabriel says, eyebrows raising slightly. "You should bring it by. I can have it fixed up in no time. On the house. Besides, I always like to see older watches, where they came from, what's out there in the world. You see some strange ones from time to time." He smiles again, nodding his head slightly. "Special recipe? Well, it's won me over, that's for sure."

"Yes, really." Zelda gives Gabriel a bit of a raised eyebrow. "Oh, now you don't have to do that. I'll pay you and everything. It's not a special watch or anything. Just old and not working any more. Can't have come much farther than Brooklyn." She doesn't think anything about it is strange, that's for sure. And since her entire family is from the area, it has to have come from around here, too. "Glad to hear it." Complimenting her cooking is always a good way to win the baker over. "It's always nice to hear customers liking your food."

"Oh, it's fine," Gabriel says with another dismissive wave. "It's not fair to charge you for what's going to take about thirty seconds worth of work, anyway. Besides," he says, fixing Zelda with a wry smile, "I saw you slip the extra muffin in there."

"If you keep fixing people's watches for free, you're never going to get paid. And then how're you going to afford rent?" Why does Zelda care so much about him keeping his business open? Well, perhaps store owners have to stick together. The smile is returned, innocently. "I know nothing about that, sir. Sometimes muffins just appear in the bag when someone special compliments them."

"Oh, I… have my ways," Gabriel says, an air of mystery to it. Truth be told, he babysits everyone in his apartment building as the superintendent. Which he explains. "I'm the superintendent of my building, so I get some comforts that come with it. It's more about the watches, anyway." He shrugs slightly. "And please, call me Gabriel, not sir. It doesn't sound right on me."
The mystery to his saying gives Zelda a roll of her eyes and a raised eyebrow, but other than that, she just laughs. "Oh, I'm sure you do. And I'm sure that'd come with some perks. Gives you the luxury to be all about the watches." She's mostly just teasing, not seeming to hold his being well off against him. Then, though, she just smirks. "I was just going to start calling you the Muffin Man. But I guess Gabriel works, too. I'm Zelda, by the way."

"Oh yeah," Gabriel says, rolling his own eyes. "I lead a thrilling and exciting life." At least he used to. Nowadays not so much.. but that will all probably change soon with Pinehearst getting worse every day. At least he'll have muffins. "Muffin Man?" Gabriel repeats incredulously, shaking his head. "Gabriel definitely works. It's nice to finally meet you and learn your name, Zelda."

"Come on, being in charge of a whole building and getting to run a store filled with something you're interested in? That sounds thrilling." Zelda puts all of Gabriel's goods into a handled bag - easier to carry and then puts his drinks into a drink carrier. "I've seen you in here before. Just never got a chance to introduce myself in the midst of taking orders baking. So, it's nice to get the introductions out there." And he didn't make any sort of joke about video games or Link. Impressive.
