History
I do not much like talking about the time before I set foot on American soil. That part of me is long dead, I am now and forever Yusef ibn Dib. However, I will gladly tell you the story of how I came to be a part of your country. It is a surreal tale and I am not sure you will believe me.
Back in the 90's, I was a member of the Republican Guard. I had a family, a wife and a son, of whom I was very proud of.
My village and many others in the region were set upon by a very bad man, a local warlord, he had in his care a special man. A man who could see futures, but with Allah's given gift he had to trade his sanity. He was quite mad, if it were not for his gift, this warlord would have killed him long ago.
How I came to your country revolves around this man, this seer. Everything I am now is because of him.
It started one day, when the seer had a fit. When he is set on by strong visions, he become violent… childlike. Screaming and wailing like a woman in mourning over her lost man. Never a pretty sight, but when he spoke, you listened.
The words he spoke that day condemned my village. He talked about secret support for the resistant effort, that they would give food and shelter to the soldiers, welcoming them with open arms. These men were to be tools to change.
This news infuriated the warlord and he ordered the death of all within' the tiny village, he did not kill some of us. Those of us let live, were allowed so as a warning. That this man could take away everything.
Even though the lost of my family was devastating, I would bide my time. I would have gladly joined my family, however the Seer could no longer live. This man could not be allowed to keep such a mixed blessing. In fact, people that see our futures should not be in the hands of influential men.
How do you kill a man who can see the future? Not easily. Many will know their own death is coming.
This one knew. Even today it gives me chills to remember that night.
My plan was simple. I would go in and kill the Seer, then I would sit and wait for the warlord's men to find us… then I would join my family. However, the seer had seen my future and knew differently.
